I had an awesome day trying out my first cyclocross bike. I'm very pleased with my decision to go this route over a hybrid. I did a 50mile road ride a few days ago and today I took off the slicks and put on a set of Kenda Quickers. I road a gravel road that branches off into endless logging roads. Most were rocks and packed dirt with gravel also. I rode through a few creeks and even down a creek bed to avoid a washed out road.

The tires performed very well. They had plenty of traction on some big gravel hills but were smooth enough with good speed on the hard packed stuff and pavement. The bike performed well. It is a Jamis a Nova Sport with nothing done to it other than a different saddle. I'm pleased with my purchase and can't wait to explore some more tomorrow. I'm off all week and will be putting a lot of time in on the bike. Here are a few pics from my ride.

Thanks I'm really impressed with these tires. Granted my experience is limited but they are very versatile and handle the mud, gravel, rocks, and clay quite well.

I have the exact same bike! Like you I am very pleased with it as well. This CX definitely beats a hybrid.

BTW what kind of road tires do you use on the Jamis? And how different are they then the stock tires? I am contemplating where to put road tires on my CX.

Nice bike and nice place to ride! I nearly went with the Jamis but instead I bought a Trek Crossrip, just brought it home today. Still tons of snow here though. Can't wait to get out and do some similar rides to yours.

By the way, what type of phone holder is that? I want to get something for my iphone.

play with the tire pressure as needed to adjust for days with more roads vs more technical.

i use both a cx and steel framed touring bike on gravel...both work well.

That's a Scosche phone holder and it's fantastic. I've had it on my other bike for over a year and it's never dropped my phone. It's also big enough to carry gps or even the dry case I use for my phone.

I've put 200 miles on it this week in lots of gravel, mud, and torn up roads. Today I did a 45 mile ride half on dirt and half highway. I was toast at the end. These mountains are tough on me! Very pretty tough

I test rode a Jamis Nova Sport last night. Really liked the bike... I wasn't too impressed with the stock tires though. They're fine for road riding but I found the bike sliding around alot when I took it on a trail & some gravel (just my opinion... bike is high on my list if I can talk domestic management into it)

Which tires did it come with? I'm using Kenda Qwickers rusty came with it but my shop gave me two sets so I don't know if they were the originals. I don't know if you can tell much by this picture but this is a trail I have ridden a lot and the tires do well. There is a portion of the trail that has a really hard bottom with a thin layer of slick mud. I was sliding really bad on it the other day but the guy I was riding with was too and he has a 29er so I think it was just the conditions and not the tires.

Don't get me wrong.they aren't MTB performance but they do pretty well. I really like them on gravel.
