I ride road only, but I wanted wider tires, so I have a Specialized Crux Cross bike, and I love it.

A cross bike is a great option if you want versatility. With just changing tires it can be everything from a fast road bike, all day touring bike, gravel road explorer, or even handle some single track if you have good bike handling skills.
I would stay away from it if you want to ride more technical mountain bike trails though.

Yes, yes you do want a cx bike. IMHO a cross bike is a very logical but overlooked choice for a "first" road bike. The utility, room for wider tires, upright-erish position, and longer wheelbase are spot on. I feel sorry for blokes who go out and buy a Tarmac, Madone, or CAAD10 as their first road bike and end up being turned off of road bikeing because of how uncomfortable a road race bike can be.
My cross bike has opened up so many more riding opportunities than my Serotta ever afforded me: loose dirt roads, new singletrack that I never bothered to want to drive to, bum trails by the river etc. My cross bike is now my #1 and only, my Everything bike: a roadie, a singletrack shred sled, and commuter Fredmobile.
Get one. Post a picture of it on the trail.

Agree. I find two bikes are super versatile. A hard tail (but suspension can be overkill a lot of the time) or a cx bike which meets hardtail and road bike right in the middle. I pulled the drops and put on my own bar recipe but the frame is awesome.

Bought a Trek hybrid and realized I really wanted a road bike. Sold the DS at a horrible loss and got the Domane. Like going from a truck to a sports car. But I forgot about winter - where that DS was awesome. I rode the DS in the snow - not just on the ground but falling. So I'm keeping the Domane but I'm adding a Crossrip Ltd next Monday. Now I can do trails and winter riding. Both have their uses.

Its a drop bar thing.. just realize you cant plough over stuff that fat tires MTB, will take on.
Now every main brand sells one of the type (essentially a hybrid with drop bars)
