tire recommendation help
Hey guys...i have trek cross bike on the way and want to change the tire out. The ones that are coming stock appear to more on the knobby side(bontrager cx3) I would like to put something that favors the road a bit more but still have some traction to them...im a noob so any help would be great

If the stock tires have knobs on the side those can be your 'trail' tires. These would also be useful if you try cyclocross racing.
For road, and lets say gravel roads/trails, you don't need much tread. Most of the tires 32-25mm and wider have some form of tread already built in (panaracer, clement, etc.). Depending on the bike's tire clearance, first determine how big of a tire will fit, and then based on the riding you're planning on doing you can pick an appropriate tire. For road only, with very minimal gravel (no large stones, steep climbs/descents), you can probably use a 25 or 28 if you want to maximize road benefits.

I pulled the tires from my CrossRip and put on the Bontrager AW2 700*25's as I am using my bike for commuting.

If you want to have a faster tire that is still fine on the dirt/gravel you can look at the Panaracer Pasela. It rolls really well and in the wider sizes (35-38mm) it actually has decent traction on all but really loose gravel.

I have two sets of wheels. One built up with the knobbier WTB All Terrains and another set with WTB "Slicks". Even though they are called Slicks, they do have a nice tread. The cool thing about them is that they are a fat 32, so they have plenty of volume and look really nice. Here is my Salsa in commuter mode with the WTB Slicks

A great tire on the cheap, Kenda Kross.
My Dad runs these on his Giant Cypress, and never has suffered a flat here in goat head country. They feature a thick smooth rolling center section.
Have ordered up a pair in 26" size for my Trek 3500, because the stock tires are going flat constantly. $15 a pop.

Dealer would swap in other tires at point of sale.. the one here does. pick ahead of time and it can be done during the build up .
