    Cross bikes with bar end shifters

    Hey guys, I was sent here from the long-distance competition subforum.

    Having never previously bought a bicycle, I am in the market for a new one and I think CX is my best option. I will be transitioning from a 70s sport touring bike (74 Nishiki Competition) and so I am looking for something that will have a similar ride/geometry but that will weigh substantially less.

    Not exactly sure what you're asking. I didn't see a question. As far as bar end shifters, I've never seen a production bike with bar end shifters. You'd have to do that yourself. Geometry wise, I don't know anything about the Nishiki, but I've read many people saying that the older bike geometry is similar to your traditional cross bike of today. Not sure how true that is though. Weight should be lighter. Depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a LOT lighter, but it's going to cost you and cost you in durability because you'll more than likely have to go carbon fiber to get a very lightweight bike. Most aluminum and titanium bikes will be lighter than the Nishiki though. Just not terribly lighter.

    Mr. Weinrib,

    In the other thread you mentioned competition. If that means on the road, get a road race bike, not a cross bike. If that means Cx, get a Cx bike. Really, it's not that complicated. Don't worry about bar ends. They are nice, but unless you have tried the alternatives (i.e. brifters) you don't have any good reason to make that the top priority.

    I like bar ends, FWIW. But they don't make the wrong bike somehow magically better.

    The only good thing about bar-ends that I can come up with is that they're slightly easier to use on a 'cross bike than downtube shifters.

    It sounds like you probably don't have a lot of experience with bicycles other than your Nishiki, so I wouldn't recommend that you take the ride and geometry of that bike as a good guide for what you want in a new bike. I would recommend instead that you keep an open mind, decide on the type of bicycle you want (e.g. road, cyclocross, touring) and then simply buy the bike at the right price point that fits you, without worrying too much about the components or geometry. You can only develop the experience to be picky by trying out different things.

    It was done before the Shimano STI gizmo inventions.. Now the TW factory builds will probably have the Sram/Shimano stuff..


    Its all I use on my C&V road and touring bikes ..

    I dont race CX , none are/were around and I was slow 33 years ago when, I was half my current age ..

    Bar ends come stock on the surly cross check. I built my soma double cross up with bar end shifters in part because they're relatively inexpensive and in part because I like the friction for shifting across a triple. Both bikes are very good choices. They're not super light by any means but weight is, IMHO, overrated. They are excellent bikes that you can use as all rounders. This is mine with bar ends:
