Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Comfortable bike for the over the hill crowd...recommend

At 56yrs old and about 35 lbs overweight I want a bike that will "inspire" me to do longer rides on both asphalt and gravel. I spent a day test riding various gravel/endurance bikes but nothing spoke to me...yet. I may have overlooked bikes that fly under the radar. Realizing that bike fit and comfort is an individual thing, I did make an effort to seek out bikes that are mentioned in this forum. Bikes test ridden were Salsa Vaya 3, Kona Jake, Surly Crosscheck, Fuji 1.5 cross, Specialized AWOL comp, Salsa Fargo, and Giant Anyroad. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm 62 and 170 lbs, just six weeks into training for a long tour on both paved and unpaved roads. I bought a Novara Safari at REI for $680 including tax and I like it. My other three bikes are road bikes but this hybrid is a comfy ride (not that the others weren't) with its wider tires and more upright seating. It is not light, as the others you mention probably are, at least compared to mine. REI no longer has it on their website, but you may find one in one of their stores if interested. The bike is built to haul a load and comes with trekking bars, a rear rack, pretty low gearing, and ability to upgrade to disc brakes.

What features/components/characteristics did you like/dislike about each of the bikes you rode?

Were all of these bikes correctly sized and set up for you? Were any adjustments made/offered after the initial rides on each bike to try to correct any shortcomings?

Is there anything in particular you wanted but did not find in the bikes you tried?

How much gravel are you planning on riding? That may change the suggestions that people may provide. If a little, I may suggest going and test ride a Specialized Roubaix. If a lot, you might also want to check out the Trek Crossrip.

I'll be moving to the KC area soon, and plan to compliment my road riding with gravel riding. I've been looking at the new Specialized Diverge, and possibly modifying a Trek Boone. I love the ISO technology on my Domane, and the Boone is equipped with the same tech. The Diverge seems to be gravel specific, built off of the Roubaix frame, with some modifications.
