Thru axle cyclocross bike frame. What are the benefits and disadvantages.

Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". Thru axle cyclocross bike frame. What are the benefits and disadvantages.

142mm thru axle. Does it require special rear hub? This "thru axle" is very new to me, so please kindly pardon my ignorance.

Here is a primer that you can use to determine if you need or want 142 for a cyclocross. Typically I dislike new standards but this is one that I like a lot in theory. When I was at the Handmade Bike Show in Charlotte NC, this year, many of the builders were using through axles on their cyclocross builds.
