Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Mtn bike gravel grinder build

I want to convert my Raleigh M60 into a gravel grinder. I'm looking at converting it to 700cwheels. It looks to me that all I need to do is find a set of cantilever breaks long enough to reach the rim. Is this a viable conversion for this type of bike or should I build off of a road frame.
Thanks
Mike

I am pretty sure that whatever 700C tires you could fit under that thing would be pretty narrow.

Get a pair of these jobbers:
Compass Bicycles: 26" Tires

And I believe the M60 has a suspension fork. Might want to swap out for a rigid fork, such as the Surly 1x1.

Even if you could find cantis long enough to reach, you'd pay a huge price in braking power due to the extra length. Linear pulls might be a more viable option, but I've never looked into using them for a wheel size conversion.

The 26 inch wheels are just fine for gravel grinding. If you want a 29er, then it's N + 1 time. Otherwise find some tires that are suitable for the kind of gravel roads you are riding on and make any other changes you might need to make the mtb more road worthy. That's what I did with my '91 team stumpy by throwing on different tires and using a trekking bar:

I think trying to convert that bike to a 700C wheel would not be worth it. put a rigid fork, some "narrow" tires, and set up the handlebar for multiple grip positions and it will be perfect.
