Shimano's 10s road shifters are compatible with the company's 10s road derailleurs and 9s mtb derailleurs. I tested a Volagi that was a mix of 105/XT (with an 11-36 SRAM cassette) and it shifted quite well.

CX bike 1: 50,34 chainrings x 11-28T cassette. I use this bike on both road and trail.
CX bike 2: 42T RaceFace NW x 11-32T or 11-36T cassette. My all around commuter and training bike.

36/46 with 11-28. I don't race cross, and use it mostly for long dirt road rides. Looking at doing some bigger climbs this year, and will probably just swap the 36 for a 34, and go 11-32 in the back

34/46 with 12-32 on my cross beater. I use it as a cross bike in a local cross park (Riverpoint CX park in RI) as well as a winter road beater. The gearing is perfect for me. Way better than the 50/34 I originally built it with. The gaps are much closer now and I can climb just about anything off-road. There's a road/dirt classic in RI this Spring (Rhodekill) that I'll use this bike in if I enter it.
