    Front chain catcher

    I've had some chain suck issues in my current TCX and now that I'm upgrading to a new one, I'm debating whether I should install a chain catcher on the front dérailleur to prevent any frame damage should I do it again. My old frame had some rubber glued around the bottom crank by the previous owner which prevented any minor damage.

    I don't think my new bike has one on it already. If not, I'm looking at one from K-edge.

    Do many of you install a chain catcher?

    I run N-Gear catchers on my gravel and road bikes. They are cheap - around $12. When properly set up, it works great! Knock on wood, but I haven't dropped a chain in months, while it used to be a common occurrence.

    Just be careful that you set it about 1 mm away from your chain when you are in the small front/big back gear combo. Any farther away, and you can drop the chain through the catcher, and it is really hard to get it back out.

    I never had one until my SRAM Force-equipped carbon bike came with the factory SRAM catcher. Great product, I plan to put one on my Monstercross build this winter. K-edge looks similar to SRAM.

    I have the K Edge and it works like it is suppose to. I got it on deep discount somewhere online.

    Chain fall off at the top, which chain catchers help prevent, is totally unrelated to chain suck which can chew up the right chainstay.

    Chain suck has a number of causes, including inadequate chain lube, shift habits and worn or damaged chainrings. Chainsuck which only happens during shifting, is sometimes different from chainsuck that happens unpredictably at any time, shifting or no.

    Knowing the age and overall condition of your drivetrain, and more info about when the problem started, and where and in what conditions were you riding.

    If you have a CF or lightweight frame and a chainsuck problem, I strongly suggest that you improve chainstay protection, possibly in the form of a hose clamp at the critical area with the worm gear housing at the bottom of the stay as a "bumper". If the pattern is such that you need to protect more area, trap a piece of wood or plastic under the clamp.

    It happened once on my current TCX that I built up from a used frame using older, but in very good condition, Shimano 105 5600 drive train that I took off my road bike and had my LBS put on. It could have been that the derailleur stops were off a little or I made the mistake of shifting down while pedaling hard uphill. Fortunately, on that bike there was a piece of rubber glued around the bottom bracket that prevented any damage. I clean the drive train and chain regularly but it's always ridden on crushed limestone/gravel bike baths so it gets dirty quickly. The chain was new late last summer. I'm selling that one and just bought a brand new TCX Advanced Pro 1 and I don't think it comes with a chain catcher so I'm thinking it would be a good idea just in case.

    I have the K-Edge chain catcher on my Crux. My problem was my crappy and less than smooth remounts in CX races bounces the bike around a bit and sometimes knocks the chain off. Installed the catcher and solved that problem .... chain coming off, not my crappy form.

    Do many of you install a chain catcher?

    The Sliding Dropout IGH Koga Trekking Bike and My Mountain Drive - M3L Brompton, Are the only bikes that do Not have a chain catcher..

    I like what K-edge has to offer even if they're a little pricey. Can't decide between these two though.

    I did a lot of research before buying my shadow zee plus derailer and raceface n/w. I run flatbar a do to injury but I believe I can convert it to road bar setup with some work. Installed a chain keeper but recently took it off. Can't drop the chain , it's a short cage with 11-36 cassette. The two main things I found that makes it bulletproof is the clearance between the cassette and the top pulley while shifted into low (. A lot of time on stand adjusting it to just clear but maintain chain clearance while shift into the low gear . Also the clutch adjustment was important for good shifting and keeping the chain on from 3-4ft bounces off concrete floor. There are clutch setup for drops from Sram and swimano but are more money. I haven't dropped a chain since this setup and it's been beat. It's been in some serious mud but if I was going to put the Paul keeper back on it would be because real deep mud and not from bouncing.

    This is great if you have a mtn crankset, *and* external bearings, *and* the bearings are not Phil Wood.
    I have it on two bikes.
