The Cult of CAAD - Cross Edition

A couple of years ago when I started bike hobbying, I really liked the looks of the Cannondale CAADX. As a few years have passed it has grown disk brakes, and had some color changes. (I liked the solid silver, oh well!) But it's not the first or last aluminum Cannondale cross bike. There was a CAAD9 cross, and before that a CAAD8 Optimo, and before that in the mid-2000s I haven't looked, and in 1998 there was a CAAD3 XR800 with a sort of MTB/road combination frame, and an XS800 with a HeadShock shared with a few hybrids and touring bikes. Was there anything before that? Why does the CAAD number go up every three or four years? Does the CAADX count as a CAAD10? I don't know! Someone chime in. My hope is that this thread will soon be filled people complaining that they can't mount racks or fenders to the new through-axle CAADX; but until then enjoy this photo of the XR800 frame I acquired off Craigslist today, and maybe if I'm honest my excuse for starting the thread. Someone loved it once; it's well used. The seller said he had gotten it from his BIL, and pulled a 30-speed drivetrain off it; and it has Paul cantis. Neither of those things was ever on it originally! I think I saved it from being Drewed.

Sweet bike - the old Handmade in the USA Cannondales are awesome, and it looks like you got a great find. I have a 2010 CAAD9 (last year made in PA), and used to have a ~1998 T-400 touring bike as well, before regrettably selling it as it was just a tad too big for me. I've always wanted to find another Cannondale touring bike in my size to build up, as they are considerably lighter than a steel bike while riding nearly as good - but it is impossible to find a newer one (with a threadless headset), either as a complete bike or a frame.

The CAAD number goes up each time they re-design it - for example, the CAAD10 has a different alloy, different shaped tubes, and no longer has the trademark hourglass seatstays that were found on the CAAD9 and earlier bikes. It usually gets a bit lighter every time. Pretty much all of them are great bikes, and can be just as light as a carbon fiber road bike and ride almost as well too - my CAAD9 weighs around ~17 lbs with a mixed Rival/Force groupset and ROL wheels.

I picked up a 2015 Caadx a couple of months ago and have to say the design of the rear stays and longer head tube makes it a great gravel bike. So far I've gotten about 600 miles on it with only a few changes from stock, a shorter stem, Salsa Cowbells and a set of MSO 40's.

I got a 2014 CAADX and also changed stem, saddle, pedals, and tires (USH 33s). I ride it on the road and on gravel, and it is a truly sweet ride!

I'm looking at getting a 2013 CAADX right now. Do any of you folks know what the rear spacing is on these bikes? 135, I hope, but can't find a definitive figure anywhere.

    Thx
    Henry

If you look up the hubs it came with, you will see 130 on the cantilever models, 135 on the disk models.

I just picked up a 2011 CAADX 105 yesterday and am really looking forward to riding it. I wanted to get a bike a I could use for recreational road riding as well as fire roads and rail trails so wanting more of an all arounder than dedicated CX bike so we will see how it goes. Plan on getting an extra road wheelset to mount some road specific tires on for some longer rides.

Mine is the brushed raw aluminum frame with black components and it looks great.

I may have jumped the *** on this. I haven't built up the bike. I don't have handlebars & stem or seat post and saddle yet. I do have shifters but I'm also not sure if my Exage RD is just too old to do Shimergo 3x9 and I haven't been able to try it yet. I'd like to build it up and see how I like riding it before investing in a paint job. I really like this pattern, though. If this bike doesn't work out I'll find another use for them.

Pursuant to the first post in this thread, I finally have this XR800 nearly together. I still need pedals, and to get the right length bolt for the front straddle cable hanger. I'm not strictly happy with it; some of my choices (especially wheels, tires, crank, and stem) have made it pretty porky. But it seems to ride nice based on a trip around the cul-de-sac and I really like the big rangy look to it. I'm sure I'll keep working on it. If it rides nice enough to make me want to keep it, I plan to have it powdercoated and I have a nice set of replacement decals for it.

Vuelta Corsa HD wheels, I wanted something that would stand up to dirt road commuting under schlubby me, but I may have overdone it.

The Pauls are what sold me on this frame. The tire clearance shown here is a lie! These tires are 32 mm. This bike shipped with knobby 35's. The front fork crown has the closest clearance and will take the front wheel of my wife's hybrid with its treaded 40 tire.

Campy shifter + MTB FD + road triple = purest heresy

Though I really like the color scheme, I would have prefered if Cannondale had gone a bit lighter on the branding - the "Cannondale" on the seat tube and fork are too much .
    Cheers!

    "Vintage" F3000SL CAAD5 Flatbar CX 700c Conversion

Found this all-original, NOS gem at a Garage Sale, for $200. I spotted it inside the garage, hanging from rafters. Owner said it has not been ridden since 2002.....and the thick layer of dust attests to that statement. Was originally asking $350 - but I said, "Headshok needs a rebuild(not true)".... so I got it for my price. The 16mm wishbone, pencil seatstays has the creamiest road compliance I have ever ridden(like Cervelo R3SL)

    Before(23.0 pounds, w/ pedals):

    After(19.4 pounds, w/ pedals):
