Bike trailer without fenders

I've had fenders on my hybrid since I bought it 2 years ago, and just began pulling my daughter in a trailer this summer. My rear fender broke off on our trip to Mackinac Island this weekend. I never (purposely) ride in the rain, so the fenders have rarely been put to use for their intended purpose. I'm wondering though, if I don't replace them do I need to worry about kicking dirt into the trailer and in my kid's face? 99% of the time we only use the mesh screen and not the windshield. Can someone who pulls their kids in a trailer without fenders let me know if it's ever been a problem?

We probably ride 90% on road, 10% on crushed limestone trail/hard packed dirt trails.

I don't have fenders but keep the mesh down in front of my kids. On gravelly or dusty surfaces, some will get into the trailer. On wet or muddy surface, they'll get some on their faces and clothes. My kids always have sunglasses on so it's usually worth a giggle or two. ...and yes, you'll need to wipe down the inside of the trailer when it gets too messy.

In general, riding around on suburban bike paths is no problem and the kids have never even comments. Between our 3 girls, we have ~5 years of use out of it and maybe 7-800 miles and there's never been a single complaint.
