Spent the evening cleaning and lubing a craigslisted trail-a-bike I'd picked up last week.

The freewheel is toast and I'm wondering if anybody can help me figure out what I'm dealing with for replacement. 18 tooth, DNP, 8 splines. Photo below.

Is this just a typical BMX freewheel built into a 20" wheel? How common is that spline pattern for the removal tool (chances of an LBS having one on hand to pop it off for me)? And what am I likey to find on the hub (thread pitch/diameter) for procuring a replacement?

Doing the work myself is preferred and I've got a chain whip. Just haven't worked on BMX/single speeds before. It'd also be nice to have the new freewheel in hand before I start because, man, does my 4-year-old love riding this thing.

I'd check your bike hops and see if they have the tool. If not then I'd buy a new freewheel and the tool for it at the same time. I have what I call an orphan single speed freewhell but I only call it that because here the tool is a special order item. I needed to rplace the wheel so all I did was diassemble the freewheel on the bike and then use a padded channellock pliers to remove the body without damaging it. Then I reassembled the freewheel and put it one the new wheel. Just get a freewheel and matching tool.

You can get an idea of the number and types of splined freewheel removers here. Tools, Lubes, & Cleaners - Tools - Component Specific - Freewheel and Cassette Tools - Niagara Cycle Most new bikes don't use a freewheel but have a freehub/cassette combination. Those have a locking ring on the outside of the cassette. You should have no problem finding a single speed freewheel at the larger online stores thanks to the popularity of fixie bikes. In Bike Shop Saturated PDX bring the wheel in and ask them to use their tool to unscrew it .

Buy your own remover that matches the replacement Freewheel you will keep ..

.. tool engages the core that screws onto the hub.. a bench vise or an Adjustable wrench holds the remover .

Shimano has a 4 pin. that has 8 notches ... Maybe they engage 1/2 of them .

but Both wheel and remover Not in front of Me, 1st person, Not a Guaranteed fit thing..
