    Bike for 8 year old girl?

    What kind of bikes are 8 year old girls into these days? (my girl is a very girly girl... flowers, pink, white, these are must-haves). She wants a bike with gear, not a single-speed.

    My eight year old bought her bike from Wal-Mart (remember its' for riding around the block - it's not for racing or exercise). They (and Target) have lots of upgrades, streamers, baskets, helmets to make it more feminine. Her's is a 5 speed with hand brakes - cost about 50.00.

    You can usually get these from garage sales as well.

    Wally world bikes might do the trick, specially the Bratz bike with the velvet purple banana seat and the chromed mechanical fork.

    Trek and Fisher also sell girlie bikes with baskets, flowers, you name it.

    I got my 8-year-old girl her first real bike at REI in early June. It's a Novarra (I think the model is "Dirt Rider") with 20" wheels. We chose the one-speed with a coaster brake and single hand brake, but there's also a 7-speed version. Color is a nice light blue and white. We added a white basket, and REI also sells bells and grips with colored streamers if you want.

    She loves it. It took her three weekends to learn to ride. Last weekend the family rode 15 (flat) miles together, half on a paved bike path and half unpaved (Lexington to Concord MA and back). She will probably need a bigger bike in just two years, but this is perfect for now.

    One extra suggestion: we got a seat wedge for her bike and filled it with a patch kit for people (instead of the usual patch kit for tires). Contents include wet wipes, bandaids, sunscreen and bug repellant. We have used it on almost every outing, either for our own daughter or for other people's kids. A kid with a scrape is MUCH happier after getting a bandaid, especially one with a picture on it!

    My parents bought my little girl a new bike a few months ago.she dressed it all up and just thought it was the greatest thing.then I stumbled over her little trek mtn bike.
    My dad told me last week that she won't even ride her new one that is at their house now.
    I know that Giant offers some "girly"type mtn bikes.like the Mt.track 60 it is metallic purple and you can add stuff to it from walmart to dress it up.
