So my wife and I went for her first real ride since last fall today. About 75 degrees, glorious day - a light cloud cover.

Anyway, I thought she would jusr go down the trail a few miles and want to return. - she was riding her heavy mtn bike, I my Lemond BA. (She still does not feel quite comfortable on her Cannondale Road Bike - long story).

Nope, she did the full twenty miles first time out - not too bad for my wife at 65 yo.

Pretty soon we will be doing 30 miles!! Here she is on the ride.

And, no, we are NOT, "Old Folks on Bikes." (Reference another thread) - you know my feelings on calling folks "old!!"

Congrats Denver! Did you guys have alot of wind on your side of the rockys? I did 23 miles in 30+ MPH wind, it killed me today!

About 10-15 mph - but no matter what way I went I had a head wind!!

Incidentally, she is singing a solo at church today. She has a gorgeous voice, also.

You know, many years ago the world was full of old people. They were EVERYWHERE! Lately I noticed that there are hardly any people who look 'OLD' to me, and there are a lot more people who are 'too young'. I don't know what happened. It could'nt be my outlook, could it?

Outlook sounds right to me.

I'm 37 and I know when I was a kid, I looked at people at 37 and thought they were ancient. Now I don't think either my wife or I look as old as the people we knew as kids, but I also realize that to the kids now days, I too must seem an old fart.

But as I read your comment about older people - I have to agree, either we've turned into a younger society, the old folks are looking younger or on a sad note, we just aren't looking in the right place. Which means we aren't looking. Demographics would indicate that this country has an enourmous population of over 70 and getting bigger. (and who's to say that 70 is old)
Heck I just got asked to join AARP - what's that say about 37?

The real question to ask is why aren't we seeing the elderly. Why have we locked them up and not included them in our world...

The wife, 2year old and I also had a nice ride on Sunday here in Denver. Only did about 12miles, but with a 26lb child in a trailer - it's a great workout.

Ahh - to be in the Rocky Mountains in spring time... nothing better.

"Elderly"?? Don't get me started on THAT word

Anyway, a lot of older folks (including my brother and sister-in-law) are locked up safely in such retirement communities as Heritage Eagle Bend where you have to be 55 to get in, and go through a radio controlled gate, and they have their own "active senior" activities, all by their lonesome. Totally isolated from the real world with their "gated community," but with a beautiful club house and golf course.

Not for me. I want to be where I can see and associate with a broad range of folks. I love seeing the kiddos out on their bikes, the young married folks having their babies and putting the big stork on their lawn, and, yes, we even have some retired folks in the neighborhood.

We had an opportunity to buy there, but, instead, we chose a fully "integrated" community. And, since we in our mid 60's are by far the most active folks in the entire 350 house neighborhood, it is good for them to see us "elderly folks" (bah, humbug) biking, hiking, weight lifting, etc.

The in-laws are out there at Eagle Bend - nice place, but I think you made the right choice. I love the diversity of our neighborhood and wouldn't trade it for all the high priced club houses and activities....

I hope when I get your age Denver, that I think and feel the way you do... I'm only 28 now, but you seem to be much more active than most of the people I know who are my age. As far as the word "old".. I believe you are only as old as you feel, and think. When I think of "old" people... a certain age does not come to mind... It's all about attitude... my mother is 54, doesn't work, but goes to the gym a few times a week, does yard work, stays pretty active, and doesn't seem that old to me.. whereas my mother in-law is 57... and she just seems sooo much older... jeez, my grandmother at nearly 77 seems younger at heart that my mother in-law.. she's just starting to get crotchety, always complaining that her body hurts all over... when I suggest that she exercise a bit.. ya know, walk around her apt. complex, use the small gym they have there, anything to help her out, she just sorta laughs me off, and goes back to her crossword puzzles... I'm not talking about her being some kind of super athlete, but if she would do something for herself, I'm sure she would feel so much better... Old is a state of mind.. when you resign yerself to the fact that you are old.. you will be... I never want to be old, at least in mind... I hope to live to 100, but hope that I have the same attitude about things I do now...

ok.. whew... jeez, was I ranting... maybe i am getting old ? :-)
