Building 20" boys bike?
My son is turning four but is very tall for his age, so I'm planning to go from his 12" wheel bike from last season to a 20" bike. But most of them - even the more expensive brands - seem to be fairly heavy steel frame bikes made overseas. I emailed Trek or one of the other brands and they confirmed their offering was a steel bike weighing 30 lbs.
I've seen a few 20" wheel mountain bikes with aluminum frames, but he's certainly not ready for shifters. But this got me to thinking about buying a used one and converting it to a single speed. Or if there were components available - I've had difficulty even finding kids handgrips sometimes.
We may very well wind up with a plain old used steel bike (like all the rest we have) but I was curious if there were alternatives.

Just an idea .................He may not be ready for shifters...yet... but he does not have to shift. Find the gear that would be about like a single speed and tell him that he should not worry about all the 'extra' stuff on the handlebars.
