How can you tell what size tires your bike can fit?

I have a trek 7200 comfort bike and I was looking to get smaller/higher psi tires for more speed than the bontrager stock on them, but I have no clue what I'm doing. Are there any rules as to rim/tire size, or good FAQs? <----Newbie

For MTB style 26" rims, a 1.5" slick tyre is about the best in terms of efficiency and comfort on the road.
For 700c wheels, a 28mm will give the best performance.
You cant really fit narrower than 28mm , and even some 28mm tyres are on the narrow size. Some of the narrower 32mm tyres (like Panasela Pasela) are more like 28mm in performance and highly recomended, but the wider 32mm ones, like Continental Top Touring feel quite a bit slower.

Bring your wheel into a reputabel LBS (Local Bike Shop) and they should be able to advise you on the max-min tire sizes for your wheel...that's what I did.
