OK, so I'm a road biker. I have a Specialized Roubaix Pro, that I ride 99% of the time. I also have a pretty much brand new Motobecane Fantom Cross Pro, that I got as a bad weather bike. Since I got it, I began running also. I find myself running now on days its supposed to rain instead of riding, so my 'bad weather' bike is not getting much use. So I've been thinking about selling the Moto and getting a cruiser bike. Something like an Electra Hill Billy. I figure I can use it to ride with my wife and kids on the rails to trails and what not. I live in Western PA, so it's very hilly, but just curious if anyone uses a 'cruiser' type bike as a second bike and actually puts in ROAD rides of 20 miles or so on it? It looks like a really fun bike to ride, just something to mix it up and not take riding so serious all they time, but still get out there and get in a workout....

Yep. I've got a cruiser, MTB, and SS/FG, along with a road bike, and ride all of them however far I want.

I use the cruiser on Fridays...about 15 miles out and 18-20 miles back home (take the longer beach route home and make a few shopping stops). Has 7-speeds, but it's good enough for most terrains and hills.

While I don't have a cruiser, I do have an old steel frame mountain bike with big fat slicks on it that I use for paved bike path rides. It is really a blast to ride on these types of bike paths. You can really bomb around corners fast with the right rubber and also have a better ride to deal with dirt sections that are often under construction. I think a cruiser would work pretty well in this regard. Would also help to keep you in check of trying to ride too fast for the rest of the family. I have no problem on a 25 mile section that I do even though the bike is really heavy. But this turns out to be good for training on the easier terrain of the bike path.

I rode my hardrock for just about everything until last year I bought a 07 raleigh all black special single speed cruiser. My daily duty of horse feeding is 8 miles round trip, 4 miles up hill, 4 miles down. The cruiser is a blast and I seem to ride it more since it is a just get on and go bike, no gears, I seem to relax more for some reason as well. Alot easier to pony the kids bikes to school as well.
