Most new riders average about 8-10mph when they first start out. You're looking about 30-40 minutes. Keep at it, soon five miles goes by in about 15 minutes.

Yup, sounds about right. That is in line with when I started my conditioning this past spring. My son has been taking his MTB out for a short 3.6 mile ride nearly every evening for about the past three weeks. He is running around 12MPH most of the time. He runs his tires too soft though. That robs speed in a hurry. We have fun though. I give him a pretty good head start then I chase him on my 'bent. The tortoise and the hare as he calls it. The important thing is to start a consistent program of conditioning and then sticking to it. I will not take long and you will be rolling along wioth the best of them.

It depends on the terrain, your physical condition, your determination, and your bike.

FYI: When I started riding my new-at-the-time road bike in 2000 I weighed 245# and "felt good" about doing 6 miles, with a rest at 3 miles. I'm down to 190# and ride 25-40 miles a day with no breaks except stopping for traffic lights. I'm 59 years old.

In traffic? On a trail? On a "comfort bike?" Road bike? Level? Hills? Your current physical/fitness condition?

All will make some difference.

I am assuming you are not in great shape, no hills and a modest, not fast bike.

I go five miles on our trail system in about 18 minutes.

Some folks (and I would guess you) take about 30 minutes.

Just depends! If you do this regularly you will get faster quickly.

Good luck with your biking!

10mph is a good rule of thumb for leisurely riding. Even of the travelling speed is nearer 12, there is navigation and faffing around time.

Wind?

Wind makes a HUGE difference in addition to the other things mentioned. Wind, terrain and the type of bike you are riding will make the biggest difference unless you are in REALLY bad shape. I usually average in the 14 mph range for my daily Mountain Bike trips in the country. I usually ride 20-25 miles and it can take anywhere between 1hr 20 minutes to 1hr 45 minutes depending usually on the wind.
