    pregnancy, hip problem

    My wife and I love cycleing and want to do long distance tounring one day on a tandem, however after giving birth to our second child almost a year and a half ago, she can barely sit on a bike sea due to pain in her hips. we believe that her hips still havent strengthend up and gone back to normal. any ideas of how to get her body back to riding condition.

    Start with short rides and build to longer ones. My wife found that walking / slow jogging was all she could do for a while after our 2nd child. Find a very comfortable seat for her, that might make a difference.

    When I was looking at a better saddle for me, I came across something very odd. Imagine a large u shaped tube with the bottom of the U welded to a piece to mount to a seat post. Stretched across the U was fabric, kinda suspended like a beach chair. Looked like it could give a VERY different seat to pretty much any saddle. Looked like it might eliminate a LOT of issues. I guess it's like sitting in a directors chair...

    She might need to be checked by a chiropractor. After each of my babies, an adjustment has really helped me realign things and get cycling ready.

    my wife found both massage and chiropratic care beneficial after childbirth. She, however, is not a cyclist. Walking is a good place to start, build up to jogging, then start with short rides. Basically childbirth is a traumatic process to the body and it needs reconditioning to recover properly.
    gravity, friction, physical exhaustion: these are the demons you must slay in order to be a cyclist.

    Totallynodding with Joyfulmama & pointatopointb I have 4 children & after each (more so with each subsequent one) I needed a little rebuild with chiro & a skilled bodyworker. I really don't think it's strengthening that needs to happen, more realignment & release. Or at least that's what it is or me.

    I'd keep the saddle she has now & get her the help her body is calling for. I'm sure she'd like to feel 'normal' again. Pregnancy and childbirth is worth every single ache & pain and yet getting the support to heal our bodies after wards is often overlooked. This pain in the saddle is a major red flag that something's not right for her. Best to fix it now than to let it show up in more destructive ways later!

    I had SPD after my first baby 15 months ago, gentle Pilates exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor and lower abs really helped get me strong again. Also, have you looked at trikes, I'm thinking an upright Pahley like one rather than a recumbent, because you can get back supports for those seats.
