Removing front wheel for travel
If I don't use a trunk rack, I'm thinking about removing the front wheel so I can get the bike in my trunk or backseat. Is it bad for a bike to constantly remove the wheel? This is a Trek Nav 200 and the bike shop rep said it isn't hard to do, but I'm wondering how much a hassle this would be for transporting 2-3 times a week. Thanks.
As long as you have quick release it's no big deal to remove the front wheel. And there's nothing wrong with removing it whenever you need to. I used to remove mine to put my bike on a roof rack almost everyday.
It's very easy to do, just flip the lever and unscrew the other side a bit and it should slide right off. Personally mine comes off twice a week just to switch between slicks and knobbies. (off road on weekends, on road during the week) Just be sure to make sure that the wheel is back on really tight, I didn't tighten my back one down really well and started having problems shifting, as soon as I stopped and got off the bike the back tire came off.
The vast majority of bikes that I see mounted on roof racks have the front wheel removed.
