I'm on a budget, so besides checking for used seats locally on ebay and craigslists I want to know what is a good budget rear seat? I heard topeak had a recall, which is something I am going to look into. I have a trailer already so I don't want to spend too much on the seat. As long as it's safe, and sturdy I'm good.

I have that but once he falls asleep he is unstable due to the chair not having side or front support. I want to be able for him to be able to sleep and be secure in the chair. It's okay when he's awake.

Bell Classic is only $35, if you can stomach the extremely inelegant mounting hardware.

Hi. Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere but i did not see an answer when searching the threads.

i have recently acquired a used rear-mounted child seat that does not have the original hardware. I am concerned that if I replace the bolts with something generic from the hardware store they will not be rated for the same use. Can anyone provide any guidance as to what would be the appropriate hardware to use for this application, or is it recommended to only use hardware from the manufacturer?

my child weighs 24 lbs and I don't foresee using this seat until he weighs more than 30. any thoughts, comments, or suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry at all about using any common hardware store bolts, though I would avoid the cheapest Harbor Freight stuff. I would recommend going with stainless steel. If you're hyper concerned, you can spec Grade 5 Hardened bolts from a fastener supply store, but again, I really think that's overkill.

I would definitely stick to a rear mounted verses a front mount, especially if you do you any sort of distance.

I would also look for a seat that come up rather high to give your child good support as he/she grows. You will also notice some have a sort of cocoon look to them and by that I mean they sort of sit deeply and have the edges that come high on the sides. This I think would be beneficial if your bike goes down with the child in the seat. Also some seats have adjustable foot positions for their growing legs and also straps to secure their feet so no kicking or slipping.

You may find that you use the seat longer and more often than you think! I just leave the rack on my bike and it is very easy to pop the seat off and on. My children have both used my rear seat up till 40ish pounds even though we have trailers to use. Much easier with a child seat verses a trailer when riding in traffic. Also much less of a resistance is what I notice not having an extra drag that will occur using a trailer.

The only seat I can comment on is the Topeak. This is the only one I have owned and have used for about 5 years. No problems, used for 2 kids and plan on using it this summer and probably next year too!
