My son had a balance bike. Then acquired a bike with training wheels at his grandparent's house. Thankfully it was only occasional use. One weekend while I was working on bikes he took the trainers off himself. Tried and cried it was hard.

We went home with the bike and one Sunday morning he wanted to ride. Tried and cried. I convinced him he really wanted to learn to ride to daycare and be a bike racer. I held his seat to get him going and for about 25 meters. Then only to help him start.

Two hours later he had pedaled two km and did one superman. And was almost starting on his own.
