Any light kids bikes out there?

Why are kids bikes 11kg when adult bikes are 11kg? I can't imagine a 4 year old pushing the same weight ad me.

Your in luck. They don't have to push them, they can get on them and ride. It's been working ok for over 100 years.

Just buy them a $15,000 Emonda. Only 10lbs.

My daughter's 20" with fenders, rack, front and rear lights, rack bag and speedometer weigh 10.5 kg. It weighs this much because it has the exact same components as an adult bike. She rides on 20x1.5 wheels not on 700x25 so her tires probably weigh more than mine. The frame probably weighs as much as mine as it's aluminum with a steel fork while mine is titanium with a carbon fork. If I removed all the stuff it'd be under 9kg easily. Just be glad it doesn't weigh 17 kg which is probably the norm for a bare bone Walmart bike.

I'm sure you could get a lighter bike, all you have to do is pay the price. But then we'd have to listen to you whine about $3,000 kid bikes...

As for lighter bikes, Islabikes makes great kid bikes that are light, like my daughter's. And I just found Cleary Bikes who also seem to make quality light bikes for smaller children and without derailleurs up to 20". I bet they're as light as they get. You could also buy a Haro BMX bike for your kid, that'd be pretty light too.

What size are you looking for and what features? I second the Islabikes recommendation--we have the 20" Beinn small for our daughter and it's great. It weighs in a 17.6 lbs stock, but we've added the fenders, rack and panniers. We are expecting our Cleary Bikes 16" Hedgehog for our son tomorrow, so I'll be able to give a firsthand review of that shortly.

Since you're in Canada, definitely check out Spawn Cycles. The Furi and Banshee are very lightweight. Also, the Opus Nix and Doppler are both under 10 kg.

At the less expensive end of the spectrum (since there's a widespread re-sale market), the Specialized Hot Rock bikes are comparatively light, particularly in the 12" and 16" sizes. The 20" geared bike isn't that much lighter than the competition.

Thanks... checking them out!

I have been looking for a bike and have settled on a Specialized Hotrock 16 or an Islabike. Would rather find the hotrock used for $100, but have been looking for a few weeks without success - they are rare and I am not the only one looking.

I called Islabike today to ask some questions and the rep mentioned that the prices will be going up as of this coming Friday Oct 24, 2014. Also, they will be announcing that they are offering pink in the USA. So if you are thinking about it you have a couple of days to get them before the price goes up.
