Dog on a leash running beside bike?

I took both dogs with me and my son on a 8 mile ride yesterday. I put the old dog in a trailer, and let the 2 year old lab run beside me in the grass, next to the Greenway. She did about 12 mph for much of the ride, in smooth lope, and rested with a 7 mph trot when tired. Her pads were fine, and she really enjoyed it. Mellow and quiet when we got home, and really easy to be with.
I'd like to keep doing this, and my son rides about the right speed, and enjoyed having the dogs along. I don't have much experience holding a leash in one hand and riding the bike with the other, and it feels like a crash is possible. Any one have experience doing this well, with ideas on how I can make it safer? Thanks!

a strut sticking out sideways from the back of the bike, with the leash, short on the end, is a commercial product.

Just keep in mind that dogs will run harder than they should to keep up with you. Definitely make sure you're watching for clues how she feels. (Humans can hurt dogs running with them).

Keep that in mind and pick good places to do this and you will have much better luck.
