Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

Good 24inch (540 tire) for kids bike?

Hi,

My apologies for crashing your party. I like the look of recumbents but my post today is on kids bikes. I was told that some recumbents take 24 inch tires (ISO 540) and I was looking for a recommendation for a good light one (down to 25mm diameter) and also WHERE to purchase them.

Also, the current tire says ISO 540 but I've read that some 540 tires are mislabeled and actually ISO 520! Is there a simple way to check if the rim diameter is 540 or 520? Unfortunately, its a no-name rim so I have no identifying information.

Thanks!

Funny story

So I also heard that wheel chairs also use 24inch tires so I asked a few forums on wheelchairs for a light weight tire.

The best reply was,

"We go at 1 mph. Who cares"

Most recumbents that take a 24" wheel use either 507 or 520. My V-Rex24 came with 520, which I converted to 507 so I could use Specialized Fat Girl(tm) tires, which were subsequently discontinued. You should be able to measure from bead to bead and it'd be pretty obvious which you had, since the ISO size is the bead diameter in millimeters (520mm = 20.47inches.) If by chance you have the 520 size, there is a 24x1 road tire available, the Panaracer Pasela. The 507 size is usually used in kids' bikes, often mountain bikes; so if you Google the size, mostly what comes up is knobby tires.

540, sometimes is referred to as "600A" and uses the same fractional sizing as 520, i.e. "24x1 3/8" which may lead to confusion. The ISO sizing should always differentiate them, though. AFAIK there are no high-quality tires for it.
