Wide Shouldered Roads?

Hi,

I figure that recumbent and in particular trike owners may have a resource to know where the wide shouldered roads are.

By shoulder I mean the part of the road RIGHT of the white line.

Thanks.

But at least with the rumble strip there is a part to the right you could ride.

I should mention I'm not a trike rider, but I'm taking some kids on a road trip (their first century) and wanted to take a route with nice wide shoulders.

Never came across a listing of areas with wide shoulders and I have been reading the most popular recumbent blog for 12 years.

In the US most highways designated by an 'I' followed by a number have nice wide shoulders. Unfortunately many of these in the eastern US don't permit bicycles. But many in the western states do, at least in more rural areas.

If you're looking for a specific route to use it would be helpful to indicate approximately where your ride will be held.

Steamer: you need to update your very nice blog! The Texas pix unfortunately illustrate the trend in road paving
with the rumble strip right in the middle of an otherwise acceptable shoulder. I believe USDOT has promulgated
rules requiring rumble strips on or to the R of paint stripe on federally supported roads when repaved. They do wake
up the in-attentive driver but also push cyclists out into the car-way and are really obnoxious to hit with a bicycle
above 3-4mph. Here is one comment re rumble strips: New rumble strip rules put the squeeze on cyclists | Active Transportation Alliance

Go to Google maps. Grab the little orange man icon with your mouse and place him on the roadway in question. You will see a 360deg picture of that spot. Bob's your uncle. I've checked the pavement quality and width of hundreds of miles of potential routes this way.

I didn't realize that was the reason they started appearing. Fortunately they're doing smaller ones right on the line around here.

My suggestion as well. Note that that photos may be from 2 or 3 years ago, and on lesser-used roads, may be of fairly poor quality.

Hwy 12 from Hwy-29 to I-80/Redtop road in CA has a ten plus foot shoulder both ways. Silverado trail from -121 to Calistoga CA also has a wide shoulder.
Hwy 20 and 34 in western OR have wide shoulders in places going across the valley.

Why would I have a particular interest in wide shoulders because I ride a recumbent bike??
The presence or absence of shoulders isn't a major factor in whether or not I will ride on a road.
