Does anyone have a Trek R200 recumbent and if you do what do you think of it.

I have had my R200 since June of 1999. I like it a lot.

I have made some modifications to the 'bent. The first thing I did was change the tires. I put Conti's on them. They were thinner and lighter. Unfortunately the sidewalls on the Conti's weren't strong enough for the rides I did. So I put the Primo Comets back on the bike. It seems a little more stable.

The other major change was the new wheel set I had built. When I was at RAGBRAI last year, one of the vendors had Odessey T1000 rims on his Greenspeed. These T1000's were silver with red flames. I had to have them. So I contacted my LBS and had them order the rims.

Along with the rims, I ordered a Shimano Nexus 7-speed internal rear hub. I did this because the cable length to the rear derailluer was too long and I was having problems with the shifting. The new hub made it possible to remove the rear cassette and derailluer. I have put on a chain tensioner to take up the slack. It works GREAT!!.

The last change was to the rear braking. The Nexus came with a drum break. So I removed the rear V-brakes. The tricky part about the drum brake is connecting the coaster arm of the brake to the frame. My good friend, Dave, was able to connect it to my bike by using the metal piece used to secure a reflector to the front of my old Performance mountain bike. The braking power is tremendous.

Well, that's all I have done...so far. I am planning on putting a disc brake on the front to totally eliminate the V-brake crap on my R200.

Michael, welcome to the forums, sounds like you have a nice bent. Do you know where i could see a picture of the flamed wheelset?

If you are looking for a new R200, it's going to be awfully hard to find. Unfortuantely trek is discontinuning it in the place of wedgie tandems.

It was quite a nice bike though.

P.S. on the front of the frame, their are two waterbottle cage type screws, that are in the wrong spacing for just that. I figure it is for some sort of light that may have not hit the market. Am I missing something here**********?
