Hi I'm new to this Forum.

I have a home built recumbent with a Strumey Archer three speed rear hub.
Has any one tried this set up or a Nexus 7 speed.

It really makes chain routing alot eaiser to deal with.

Slow,
There are at least 4 in Minneapolis alone.
Mary Arneson’s folding recumbent with a Nexus 8n speed https://bikesmithdesign.com/Meetings/.../pages/01.html and the next 4 pages.

My Wife’s, with a Sturmey Archer 5 speed
https://mnhpva.org/Meetings/2005/july_05/pages/11.html and the next page.

Mine had an SA AW 3 speed when these pix were taken.
https://bikesmithdesign.com/Meetings/.../pages/08.html and the next 5 pages.
But I’ve since put 5 speed guts into the 3 speed shell.

No pix, but Terry Osell has built one similar to mine.

I may be building Mary Arneson a new commuing 'bent with the new SRAM 9 speed hub.

If you are in Minnesota, you may want to check out https://mnhpva.org
Our members have built over 300 recumbents. We’d love to have you bring your creation to our next meeting. Or even to our Ice Races Jan 28th (details on the website.)

Or, https://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/RecumbentsMN/ is a mailing list with over 200 members all over the state.

Hi HPVA Guy,

Wow, way kool !

I thought I was the only odd-ball to try something like that. My bike is kind of a work in progress.
Since I don't weld, I wasn't even sure the thing would work.
I just put the S/A AW 3 speed hub on about two weeks ago and have only put a few (around the block miles) on it so far.
My son just bought an old Schwinn Breeze S/A 3 speed off Ebay yesterday to make a recumbent out of.

I just retired a few months ago and am enjoying having time to tinker with my bikes.
Wish I could make it to your ICE RACES, but will be at Winnibigosh fishing.

Later,

I have a Corsa tadpole with an AW rear hub and a Sturmey 5 middrive. The losses are excessive with 2 IG hubs in series, but when they made these 20 years ago the 7 speeds weren't around yet. I'd consider a Nexus 8 since it has broader range.

Hi HPVA Guy,

This probably isn't the right place to ask Mechanic questions, but I thought you would know what I'm asking about.

Do you know if I can put a crimp/stopper thing on the end a shift cable for a S/A.
I have a cable ordered but would like to be able to make up my own cables.
If so, what do I use for the crimp thing?

I'm trying to send a picture but now sure if it is working.

Slow If you need an end for your cable you may find what you need at your local hobby store. They have different size barrel ends that can be crimped on.

Thanks Oldy 57,
I came up with a fix for my problem.
I soldered on a tiny electrical end fitting that I sort of modified with a Dremel Tool. It works like a champ and is probably stronger than the factory crimped on deal.

So all that is needed is the hub, and a Surly chain tensioner? No other parts?

I'm ready to buy a recumbent, I've just been waiting (patiently) for someone to release one with an internal gear hub.
