Three wheel recumbent for handicapped friend
I have a very good friend who had a stroke about four years ago. I met him 2 1/2 years ago and he was in a wheel chair. He is now walking with a cane and going to the gym daily and riding the recumbent bike with the help of someone putting his one foot into the strap on the pedal.
I asked him today if he would have a go at a three wheel recumbent bike that we could rig up either a strap (power strap) or ********** to get that leg connected to the pedal. He has pretty good control over that leg, but little use of the foot itself.
So, how about a suggestion on information for us and maybe a bike.

Well, a clipless pedal would probably attach his foot pretty securely.

Please.....Consider discussing Worksman trikes with your friend. I own a
PAV3 semi-recumbent trike that is more or less designed for folks with
mobilty issues but can walk. A PAV can be built to suit your friend's needs
at a price no other special needs trike can touch but still not be cheap junk.
The PAV can be built with pedals to retain the foot in ordinary shoes while
enabling the rider to ride in arm chair comfort.
Please.....give'm a call as they are first class folks helping the less abled.

This sounds like a situation where heel slings would work well. I'm not sure who sells them anymore though...

In response to postings about foot slipage aboard recumbents, may I add a few brief points. I have only just returned to cycling aboard a recumbent trike after a stroke some years ago, but have experienced foot slipage several times in a short ten mile ride despite having toe clips and straps. Perhaps there is a need for adjustable heel clips to prevent foot slipage happening. The adjustment made once aboard trike/bike. Riding horizontally rather than vertically may be part of the cause but ensuring feet stay on the pedals countered by heel clips - in theory a small light weight aluminium device fitting the rear of the pedal.
Anybody who knows of suppliers, manufacturers etc in the UK or elsewhere - any details would be most welcome.

I'd suggest going to https://lightfootcycles.com or to https://hpm.catoregon.org/; Lightfoot makes a point of being able to customize its machines for the differently abled, and so (to a lesser extent) does Human Powered Machines.

You might first check your extended local area for organizations that specialize in bikes and trikes for people with special needs. The Bike Rack in St.Charles, Illinois has done marvelous work for a friend of mine first pointing him in the right direction then getting him perfectly fitted. There's quite possibly a similar outfit near you.

FWIW: a couple years ago my wife and I rode TourBC through eastern British Columbia. There was one bloke who had had a severe stroke - nearly paralyzed his entire left side. Despite this, he rode his recumbent trike nearly the whole distance: 60 to 90 mile days, the longest having 4,000 feet of climbing. Quite impressive.

There was a post on the recumbent forum a few weeks ago showing a foot sling that someone built and is selling via the internet. However, it looks to me that the heel sling by Lightfoot Cycles is a much better device and would hold a persons foot in much better.
Edit: You may want to look into the Sun EZ-3 recumbent tricycle. It is an upright seated trike with almost horizontal pedaling. My wife had one and she really liked it but gave it up for a lighter, faster trike.
