I went on a short ride today on the Oak Leaf Trail in Milwaukee county, (southeast side). On the way to the trail I got run off the road by a car that turned into me, but that didnt stop me. I just kept on my ride got to the trail and some people were walking with their dog, no big deal til I noticed no leash on the dog, yup, it came after me the owner yelling at it to stop but that did no good . The dog didn't catch me, but my heart rate has never been that high. At this point I figured it couldn't get any worse but I was wrong again. About a quarter mile down the trail some people walking three to be exact, I yelled coming up behind you on your left but they forgot what their left was, and I locked up my brakes again. Over all it was a fast ride.

Unless it's an attack dog, getting off your bike will stop it cold. I used to get nervous about dogs, but I've done this with 100% sucess many times.

So, does that keep the dog from chasing you the next time he sees you?

Sounds like some of the days we all have had on the road or bike trail. I got tired of dealing with dogs not kept on a leash, I have been bit on the heal through my bike shoe and all most had a crash or wreck a few times. So I talked with my Highway Patrolman friend about what my rights were and what I could do. Now I just soak the dog down with pepper spray and if the owner does not like it, to bad, the dog should have been on a leash, then I just keep on truckin.

Nope - the chase instinct is strong in dogs, as is defense of home territory. If you ride in such an area then get off the bike and call the police, talk to the owner, or kill the dog.

I agree the chase instinct is in the dog no matter what. I have called the police and in general they don't care unless you were hert or bit, then it takes several hours for them to arrive. I have had my heal area bit and bruised through the bike shoe where it did not draw blood and the police seem to think oh well there is nothing we can do about it. The reason is by the time they get there the dog has run off no where to be found and they do not spend a lot of time looking for it in general.

More than likely killing the dog would not go over very well even though it would make a clear point about the problem and in my opinion it should be allowed,( by law it is if your in danger of harm, but do you want to deal with the situation afterwards) then maybe people would get the point and keep there dogs on a leash.

Like I said above in another post it does make a point if you soak the dog with pepper spray in front of the owner as he is attacking you while they do nothing about it other than yell fluffy stop that, He He!!!!!! they don't like pepper spray.

Sorry about the rant this is a sore spot with me in general with the public and not having there dogs on a leash on the bike trail or out in public places, even though it is a law where I live.
