    Where does one start?

I did not see a sticky FAQ here, so I have to ask as a long DF rider, how and where do you start with 'bents? It's not as if the LBS stocks a complete line of these things, and I have no idea of the brands and styles.

I do know that I miss riding long distances on my DF due to pains in shoulder and neck... so perhaps it is time to look beyond the DF and to alternatives.

Certainly I do not want to start exploring via my checkbook... so please enlighten me... where do I start?

No doubt types of riding will help answer some questions. I have commuted... my route consists of 45MPH arterial roads with bike lanes. I have toured... and would like to tour again. I do very little if any group recreational rides. But I do enjoy an occasional 30-40 mile jaunt on my own. All road. I have well over 30 years DF experience. Weather is not a big issue... it hardly rains in So Cal. Driver interaction is a big issue... so visibility, and decent handling are important.

I'll give my two cents... Even though the LBS does not have much in the bent line give them a look and try what they have. Here in the net you might find a shop, or shops, close enough to get several models. I am here in the plains of Kansas and have maybe been lucky to find what I like--at the LBS... I have both long wheel base and short wheel base. You need to try several to see what meets your riding needs. Last,,, stick with it and somethng will show up tht is within your $$ range. For the two that I have I waited quite a spell but I got them second hand. Depending where you are in So. Cal. there should be shops around that can help you. El padre

My 2 cents;...search the web for a nearby recumbent club/group and hook up at their ride start. Most bent owners are happy to share their insights.
2 shops in L.A. area are People Movers in Orange and Bent Up Cycles (location?)
After test riding as many configurations a possible (including TRIKES!!!) search eBay, Craigs list and local bike shop bulletin boards for something used. Keep in mind that your first 'bent will probably NOT be your last! All of my bents, sans the tandem were aquired used for pretty cheap compared to new. I won't quote the prices I've paid, but rest assured its pennies on the dollar compared to new. Unless a shop has what you want and you want it NOW!!!
As per your riding indicators, I would look for an EZ Racer; Tour Easy or Gold Rush Replica. Ti Rush if you have the $$$$! They are easy to learn and great for touring! But again, try as many as you can before you buy. I love my Greenspeed trikes! And they are built for FUN aaand GREAT for touring.
Good luck & welcome to recumbency!

I have heard over and over again that the only way to judge a bike is to ride one or more. The nearest bike shop that carries a lot of recumbents is about five hours away from me and so I need to study and research recumbents until I have an idea of what style I want.
I have gone from being sold on a Burley Canto (not making them any more) Rans Stratus XP and am now thinking of a Rans F series swb.
I'm not sure what I need yet because I have not ridden one at all. In intend to ride one from Humboldt Country Ca to Key West Fl. in the summer of 08.
    Good luck on your choice.

But available periodically on eBay and/or Craigs list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And be sure to check out a TRIKE or two, if you plan on THAT long of a trip.

p.s. I'm not sure if CHICO, CA. is 5 hours from Humbolt County, but that would be a good starting point!
Sorry, can't recall the name of the shop in Chico, but have heard many good things about them.

    Thanks, funbun.

I also suggest you visit www.bentrideronline.com. It's probably the largest bent-specific forum on the 'net, with more info than you can shake a stick at.

That shop in Chico is the one I was told about. There is no fast way to get there, just short ways.
When I have the money saved up I intend to make a trip over there.
My wife is really supporting my idea of the ride and that makes it better.

So when I wanted to try one out for an extended period (one month) I called around looking to arrange a long term rental deal. I couldn't find a local store that still rented any (Chicago - western burbs) but those that had suggested it would cost $300 to $400. (One used to rent them for $75/day on weekends).

I decided I could buy a used one and easily re-sell it at less of a loss than $400. Within 1 week I had found a 2004 Burley Canto on Craigslist for $695. I actually like it a lot and am keeping it.

    bike shop in chico

the bike shop in chico, ca is www.pbwbikes.com

great bike shop, i bought my trike from him after trying most of the trikes in the huge selection hugh had in stock-- great fun, and he was very patient with me. (after one session there in january i actually drove directly to arcata (to take my daughter back to school) over 299 right before they closed it due to snow-- you're right, there is no fast way there).

    good luck!
