How do I enable Smilies in my signature?

Does anyone know how to turn on smilies in the signature? Mine is currently off:

    Posting Rules
    vB code is On
    Smilies are Off
    [IMG] code is On
    HTML code is Off

I already made sure I have smilies enabled for posting but that doen't enable them in the signature. Clicking on smilies in that list only links to an explanation, but doesn't say how to turn them on. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
