Recum-Trike for touring
New to Recum's. I am a touring guy at heart and am interested in touring on a trike-recumbent of course. I have no idea where to look, i've browsed through the forums, but would like more direct information please.

Though many trikes have toured and done it well, Greenspeeds are still, I think, the standard.

A bidding war is likely, so bid $5,000 if you want the perfect touring trike right NOW.
That still may not be the winning bid.
Without specing that particular trike, $6,000 would be fair, because if you order one, you have to WAIT for it.
Currently it sits at $2,500, and has 3 days left. Given that, wouldn't surprise me if it sells for over $3,000.
Or over 5. It IS a trike your grand kids could inherit.

I have never ridden a trike, so take this with a grain of salt. I did a cross country ride on my Rans Stratus XP this year and I saw two people crossing in the opposite direction. They were very happy with their rides but there are two things which I would point out. Regardless of what people say about how people in cars will see you, they are very low to the ground and I think difficult to see. The other thing is that four of the ten states I went through had rumble strips across 100% of the state. With three wheels, you can't miss those rumble strips and you would end up having to ride in the traffic instead of the side of the road. I was pulling a Burley trailer (two wheel), and it was almost impossible to keep from hitting those rumble strips. When I bought my bent, I went to a bike shop in Tulsa where the owner sells all kinds of bents, including trikes. He said they are like Ferrari's. I would like to try one but I would think twice about long distance touring.

Anyone who pays list price or more for a used trike is nuts. Be a little patient! Winter is fast approaching and it will be easier to find one at a reasonable price when fewer people are looking. I agree that the GS GTO is a fantastic trike. I own one, so I'm a little prejudiced. I also own a well used Wizwheelz 3.4 and can easily justify spending more for the GTO. There are four GS GTO riders in my area. One bought his brand new this spring for $4,300 (with disk brakes) and had it within two weeks of ordering it. The three others, all bought used over the last several years, cost $1,855, $2,600, and $1,800. The more expensive one had about $1,200 in upgrades and accessories over the standard disk-brake GTO. Remember that the new trike comes with a warranty that does not extend to the second and subsequent owners.

Comfort is HUGE when it comes to touring. I think the most comfortable trikes for touring are the higher end WizWheelz trikes like the Race or Sport. The low end Cruiser (which everyone stocks) is comfortable and adjustable but a bit too heavy for touring. I've gone very long distances on my Race with much sucess.

ICE (manufactured in England) makes some excellent trikes, and their Trice line of trikes fold down into vary compact sizes for transporting. They are also suspended with elastomer suspension. The Trice T is their specific touring model. It is extremely comfortable, has a higher seat height which makes it easier to mount and dismount (12.5 inches rather than the usual 8 or 9 inches). They run around $2500 and are worth every penny. I bought mine without ever riding any kind of trike, but I knew it had the features that I wanted, and it was the best money I ever spent.

They are currently riding from Dead Horse Alaska down through Canada.
Look in WWW.where2pedalto.com and look under journals.
The around Australia journal is no longer there but you can buy it in book form now.
Hope this is of interest.
