Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

I get "looks" that range from amazement to awe to outright stink eye every time I go out of the house.

This goes double if I have the audacity to appear in a public place around respectable folk, lol.

Nothing to brag about, I AM a 450 lb man on a trike with a carry permit.

A heavily-armed beach ball on wheels if you will.

Who wouldn't look a bit?

It's kinda funny looking!

Yeah--you may want to start rocking a fanny pack for your Beretta. I always carry holstered--it's the law here in Ohio. Then again, you may have a holster deeper in your pocket. Nice trike brother.

You are quite correct, MN law does not require concealment. Being very big, I have trouble with belts, or I'd be using one of my obligatory big box of holsters.

Funny you should mention it, I got one for father's day! I've never had the Beretta fall out of my pocket, but it hasn't felt exactly secure either. The new fanny pack holster will need a longer strap to fit me, but thats trivial.

Nice trike brother.
THANK YOU! I fear I have let my bike sit a bit, I am going to have to kick myself in the butt.

Funniest thing I heard was from a toddler when he saw my brother and I (both on bents). He asked his mom, "Why do they do it like that?"

i get a lot of attention when i ride my ez-1. people laugh, many say "cool bike!" and motorists almost always give a wide berth. just today a pretty, young woman asked to take a photo. sometimes another cyclist catches up (or slows down...LOL!!!) and makes conversation, asking about the bike and recalling if he has seen something like it. i must say that my 'bent has given me something of a social life...LOL!!!!! seriously, because of it, i ride in the critical mass, where i've made some friends. i also joined the sierra club because it has several bike rides through the year. the bike is, simply, a marvelous conversation piece. it gets me out of the house, it is improving my health notably and makes me smile and wave to people, two things i was never known to do...LOL!!!! i really think bicycles can save the world!!!

I get a fair amount of attention on my Corsa. The standard questions, comfort, balance, cost, speed. My trike got a lot of attention too, but different. More kids seem to like the Corsa unless it is for a test ride, everyone wanted to test ride the trike. I don't allow test rides on the Corsa. The trike also got the "you are low, I hope X can see you" comments, the Corsa does not.

I can't wait for the Raptobike lowracer to arrive, that should get a bunch of comments.

My wife thinks bents are just for tech nerds. In this part of the Netherlands at least, I tend to see the bents parked around the science and engineering buildings at the university. I’m guessing that those folks are actually the ones who understand wind resistance and value an intelligent design more than trendy fashion design. My wife just responds, “Geek.” It turns out that she would be embarrassed to be seen riding with me when everyone DOES look. I have problems with arthritis, and she wanted me to get something more traditional looking like an electric assist DF to help me along WITHOUT drawing attention. I would rather get around under my own power, thanks, so I checked out the bents to get the comfort and lower wind resistance.

I was test-riding some bents through a busy city, I got tons of looks. The first ones were of concern given my wobbly first attempts. After I got it under control and started cruising down the bike path, some toddlers yelled, “Woooooooow! Mom, loooooook. COOOOOOOL!!!” That beat any sales pitch the folks in the store could come up with! I made sure I told my wife about it, too.

Now I am just waiting (eagerly!) for delivery.
My kids want to know when they can get one. They know what is cool!
My wife is (grudgingly) getting used to the idea.

The other day on the local MUP, with my friend on a Corsa in front of me, I passed a 6 or 7 year old asking his mom "Why do they have their feet in front?"

I got "why is he riding like that" on my Catrike from a 3-yr old when I passed a family out walking. Mom said, "oh cool, look at that!" while the 10 yr old just stared.

I make a point to at least wave or raise a finger to anyone who makes eye contact, say hi if I'm not rolling too fast or out of breath, and especially always give an appreciative wave when an auto passes after waiting for clearance. They may be fuming that they had to slow or wait, but I still appreciate it.

Earlier this week somebody yelled from across the street if it was comfortable? As I rode by, I yelled back "No!" After I passed, I heard them yell, "Then why do you ride it?" And that....started me laughing.

I think next time, my answer will be, "Compared to what?" or "Duh!"

:)ensen.

All the time.

I get funny looks. Kids think the bent is way cool. Generally speaking a positive funny looks. It would seem that those of us that ride traditional bikes are put off the most by my bent. Go figure.....

too

People in this bicycle town are too cycle sophisticated to be caught staring at a bent. They have asked whether I am getting more speed on the recumbent.
When I tell them it takes time to get bent legs, they don't want to hear that and they change the subject.

On my HPVelotechnik Scorpion - all the time. On an orange metalflake recumbent trike with a Windwrap fairing and a 'Devilwoman' Scorpion flag, it's inevitable. I just realize folks are saying 'cool' about the Scorp, not me. And, thats OK!

I got stared at a great deal on my ride today, and a group of kids shouted, "Cool bike". The other side of the coin was when a car passed me after its driver had been forced to slow behind me for all of 15 seconds at the most, and a rear seat passenger wound down his window and mimed shooting at me with his hand as a pistol. I know that it is highly unlikely to happen here in the UK, but I found it rather unnerving, and I do not scare easily.
