Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

A recumbent for my handicapped friend?

Hey guys, just curious if you all know of one that my friend could ride - he has cerebral palsy & can't balance at all on a standard two wheeler. He's looking for a trike, but it would have to have easy gearing. Arm control's aren't really an issue, but it has to be something easy to get in & out of. He does relatively well on a stationary, just at a slower pace & cadence. Thanks in advance!

For easy in and out you are looking for a delta type trike. Check www.sunbicycles.com I think the tadpole type would be to hard to get out of.

Agreed on the Delta Trike assessment. He won't be cheap, but Kelvin Clark at Angletech Cycles would be a good resource. He has been doing special needs bents for a loooong time.

I like the Sun Tadpole - there is a retailer close to here, too. He gets in & out of his car well enough, & it's pretty low to the ground. I need to take him up there & try out a few one of these days. Thanks all!

Check out regular adult tricycles as well. May work as well or better, and would be a bunch cheaper if they did.

+1 The owner's son has a disability, and they custom make bikes/trikes/whatever for people with disabilities. That "branch" of The BikeRack is called Creative Mobility. They even help look into possible funding sources, since custom-made are expensive. I bought my (standard) bike there and talked quite a bit with Hal, the owner. Great guy, knows his stuff (I work with people with disabilities). They've been written up in newspapers and magazines. Far west suburbs of Chicago. If you're in the St. Louis area,
you're only 3-4 hours away. Call 'em.
