Recumbent Tandem Rider Magazine
Available at your LBS! Ok, so I check there. They've never heard of it. They save face by adding that it's probably just a bunch of ads anyway and you wouldn't be able to trust any reviews. I live in a college town (pop. 50,000) so it's not exactly the hinterlands. Shouldn't they be up on this stuff? They said they only have two 'bent customers.
Anyway, I found an issue (not the one I wanted, but..) and I thought it was very interesting and I liked the ads- especially the websites. Am I supposed to not trust reviews simply because these companies also run ads?

Hi Glasspacker,
I subscribe to RTR Magazine and enjoy it very much. I think the writers try to be very fair and open minded when they review the various recumbent and tandem(including df uprights) bikes. Like RCN, arguably the most respected print magazine dedicated to recumbent bikes, RTR comes out every two months for a total of six issues per subscription year. RCN is, imho, still a little more polished than RTR, but that's largely due to the fact that RTR hasn't been around for very long, and they're getting better and better with each new issue. RCN has been around for many years and they know very well what they do.
The cool thing about RTR is that they typically give LBSs lots of their issues to give away year- round...their thinking is that, by doing this, a lot more people will discover their magazine, read their articles and reviews, love them, and eventually pay for their own subscription...which, by the way, is only about $10/year. RCN runs about $40/year. Yes, your LBS is correct--there are ads, of course, in both of these magazines. I can't think of many magazines that aren't sponsored or supported(in part) this way. But the ads in RTR aren't overwhelming; in fact, when you look at one of their issues, and see that it's in newsprint and not terribly thick with pages, you'll be surprised at how many reviews, editorials, and articles RTR can fit into their small magazine.
I think RTR is an excellent addition to our little world of recumbent bike magazines, both online and print...and I look forward to finding their latest issue waiting for me in my mailbox!
Here's a link to their website, Glasspacker. You could probably email them, and find out where the closest bent/tandem dealer to you is, where they drop off their "freebies"(which, by the way, are exactly the same issues as the "paid for" ones...they're not watered down teaser samples)...and if there isn't one anywhere near you, I wouldn't be surprised if they were willing to mail you a complimentary issue...just ask...RTR's owner and editor-in-chief, Charles Coyne, seems like a pretty nice guy.
