An Awesome Upgrade!!
 

Background info: When I bought my Burley Canto, I spec'd out the shifters and rear derailleur because I was not enthusiastic about what Burley put on these models. So, I used SRAM X.9 grip shifters and a SRAM x.9 derailleur.

Recently after receiving some birthday money, I decided that I wanted some trigger shifters that SRAM makes for the X.9 family of components. So I ordered them from JensonUSA. I put them on myself. I had never done anything like that before then. I was quite happy with myself.

Anyway, I have used these now about a week and they are perfect. The shifts are precise and quick. Plus they are simple to twist even in a pouring rain (something I had trouble with with the twist kind). The shifters even came with cables installed and coated. The cables were long enough for even the rear derailleur. I cannot say enough how awesome these are. can you shift more then one gear at a time?

First of all, good job on your first shifters installation! :beer:
(I wish I was that mechanically inclined.... :cry: )

I used to have all of my df mtn and hybrid bikes rigged with Shimano RapidFire shifters. I don't really know why, except that all of my friends used them...so I guess I figured that must be the way to go.
When I bought my first 'bent, a RANS Wave, it came with Sram Grip Shifters(3.0 I think)...I liked them quite a bit, especially because I could "jump" gears with a single twist of my wrist/hand---something I couldn't do with the RapidFires.

Are the Sram Trigger shifters very similar to the RapidFire's in operation? If not, how do they differ? I've read some really good reviews on the Trigger's, and am wondering how they'd perform on my Fusion and/or Stratus...I'm really happy with the Grip Shifters on them, especially the X-9's on the Stratus(very crisp and authoritative shifts)...but am always curious if there's something even better out there....

I want to upgrade too so I am in the same boat. another way to go is get some shimano bar end shifters and get the adaptors that let you mount them like thumb shifters. this gives you great shifting and full range in one stroke shifting too. but if I do that I have to buy a new RD.

I am not actually mechanically inclined. I followed the instructions and referred to a book Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance for help. It is the best mechanical manual out there.

My experience with Rapidfire shifters were with the first release of them. The shifters felt like you would almost break your thumb to get them shifted. So I really cannnot comment on the current ones on the market.

Like I said in my first post, I started out on my Burley with some X-9 twists that my LBS installed.

The trigger shifters can skip multiple gears too if you press in far enough. Plus they shift smoother than even my X-9 shifters did.
