Windcheetah has gone bankrupt?

I wired $5500+ to Bob Dixon at AVD to purchase a Windcheetah and now he doesn't answer my email? What gives? Anyone else having problems with AVD? I'd heard their USA customer service is bad but I haven't even given them the size for the bike yet.

Don't remember seeing any mention of Windcheetah on this forum recently.
You might get more of a response on bentrideronline.com

Perhaps some inquiries on to the BHPC might help: http://www.bhpc.org.uk/ . There's also a couple Brits who hang out on the recumbents.com forum.

I think Windcheetah is notoriously bad for correspondence, so anything is possible.

+1 to: "I think Windcheetah is notoriously bad for correspondence, so anything is possible."

This is exactly why when I was considering which trike to buy, I chose a Greenspeed over the Windcheetah IMHO, Bob Dixon makes what may be the most beautiful trike available. They have a reputation for being very fast, have superb handling characteristics, and are extremely durable. What put me off was the many postings on bentrideronline a few years ago about owners having to custom fabricate repair parts and having virtually no warranty service. The excuse at the time was that Mr. Dixon operates a one person business and when he was ill, there was no one to respond to the owners. Contrast that to Greenspeed, a company that has legions of enthusiastic owners. I've contacted GS a few times and never had to wait more than a day or two for a response.

wintersnow 11-21-11 08:18 AM

Well I finally got a response from Rob Dixon. He said his emails are bouncing. I don't understand it.

I have hand-problems so I went for the single bar steering of the windcheetah. I just hope I'm not getting ripped off. It took me a long time to save the 5.5K for the trike and it's very alarming to have them not respond to emails.:notamused:

Emails bouncing can happen with a cheap Internet provider and a lack of IT support for a small company. That's why a phone call is always more effective.

Mr. Dixon has established a history of either totally ignoring his customers or responding only after significant delay no matter what communication method is selected. That notwithstanding, there are some very happy Windcheetah riders. Maybe your trike will prove worth the wait and uncertainty.

fietsbob 12-04-11 09:30 PM

I thought it was Mike Burrows product .. ?

wintersnow 01-06-12 09:36 AM

Just a little update. Rob contacted me by email 2 weeks before Christmas 2011 and said he would be shipping the following week. I replied asking him to notify me when it ships. Haven't heard another thing. I'm just posting my experience with Windcheetah for the benefit of others. If I had been able to find that people had experiences like this with them I would have withheld 1/2 of the money and to hell with the discount.

Rob? Can you hear me? Do you even watch your company on the internet? So sad. I wonder if I'll get it before the spring? Could have rode yesterday the weather was in the 60's but it's back to snow here at 6,000 feet on Saturday!

Hi wintersnow,

Did you ever receive your Windcheetah... If so when?

wintersnow 03-27-12 06:50 AM

yes and no

received it damaged. Now it's been 2 weeks and it's sitting in my living room in parts waiting to find out who is going to pay to package it back up and ship it back to the UK! AVD is waiting to hear from DHL on the limit of their liability. I was told the shipment was fully insured. I am not happy.

The frame came apart in the middle so the rear 1/2 of the trike is turning apart from the front and the rear derailleur, of course, can't function. The front derailleur was bent over and the front spoiler is damaged. Originally my mechanic thought the seat was turning... only to discover it was the frame that either was never glued or broke apart in shipping.

BlazingPedals 03-27-12 09:49 AM

Bummer! Re-gluing the frame at the crucifix shouldn't be a big problem, and IMHO not worth the extra downtime or cost to send it back; but the bent front end sure is. I hope you can get it remedied soon. Riding time's a'wastin'!

VegasTriker 03-29-12 08:33 PM

This should be a good lesson for anyone even considering a Windcheetah. There are other high quality trike manufacturers who make special accommodations for someone with a special need. When there is a US representative, as many foreign manufacturers have, then you have someone in the US to turn to. I'm sorry that this has turned out so badly for you. If it was the first horror story I have read about this company, it would be different, but this seems to be far too common and the unfortunate thing is that the owner has a long history of really dismal after-the-sale customer satisfaction.

wintersnow 04-02-12 08:24 AM

windcheetah ripoff

It's funny you should say that.... I searched and searched for comments like that on the internet. Learned about the poor service but never guessed it would be this bad. Everybody seemed to like their windcheetah's. It's been 2 weeks since AVD said they would handle this. Their British accents are so thick and their words all run together so that I can't understand what they are saying on the telephone. Guess I'll send yet another email so they can ignore it. I'd demand my money back but I don't think I'd get it.

wintersnow 06-27-12 07:34 AM

Reply to VegasTriker, answer to "How do you like the trike?".It won't let me send a private message reply so here's your reply.....

Karl Sparenberg is now running Windcheetah and Rob Dixon (Bob) is taking a back seat.

I just got it back from the UK and it is tight and rides nice. Karl wants to build the business back up and I think you can get a trike from him a lot quicker than from Bob. Bob has suffered several personal tragedies, and was not able to perform effectively. It has been a long year trying to get this trike from the UK, but now that I know what the problem was I understand completely.

I am still waiting for the rest of my shipment, spares pack and front faring (damaged in shipping the first time). I would not purchase the farings again if I had it do do over again. They are clumsy and probably only useful in racing. But I like the box on the back and the rear fender is attached to it so it keeps the debris from hitting you in the back. The steering is nice. I have damaged hands and can no longer ride a conventional bike but I have no trouble with the WC.

Good luck.

delcrossv 06-28-12 07:37 AM

Glad it finally worked out. ANew leadership at the business may start to make up of their "ledgendary" lack of customer service.

patrice 06-29-12 04:21 AM

I am pleased to hear you got your WindCheetah in the end and I am sure you will love it. I used to own a WindCheetah about 10 years ago and I miss it sorely. It was a brilliant tricycle and I wish I had never sold it but sometimes needs must. I find it sad to see that you have been so obviously let down by AVD. I was tempted to buy another windcheetah recently but I was also concerned that they had gone bust because I got no answer to my mail and I tried phoning to no response. It is a shame because I had 4000.00 to splash out on a new machine but never even got as far as speaking to anyone.

I have been talking with Karl on the phone and via email. He is moving shop from what I understand. I have ordered some fenders for our Windcheetah. Other than getting some mud on her without the fenders my wife absolutely loves the Windcheetah. I noticed that the above links indicate the corporation disolvoed in 2010. What ever Karl seems to be doing a good job. A bit slow because of the move and being a small company then Rome wasn't built in a day.

Cheers
al

wintersnow 09-17-12 06:14 AM

I can't receive private messages... So those who sent them my appologies.

I am still waiting for the front faring and the spares pak. Karl emailed me saying that they are moving the shop and should be moving on the 14th.

wintersnow 09-17-12 06:15 AM

Well if your patient, don't order any extras, you could have it in a year.... probably.... I think... wait until I get all of my things from them. Then order from Karl. I'll post when I get them.

any pics to post?

kennpro 09-25-12 03:44 PM

Too bad. I saw a Windcheetah on the trail being ridden by a man with a disability. It is the most stunning looking trike I have ever seen. The design is incredible. It's a shame it has so many problems.
