    3sp internal with a freehub? Options for lower inches on a CT

    Is there any such thing?

    I would like to extend the gear range of my bike. I was thinking it would be really nice if someone is making an internal 3 speed hub with a freehub attached so I could continue to use my cassette and select the internal with a lower gear range.

    I haven't looked into whats out there a whole lot because I simply don't know what to look for. The only thing I have seen in use other than the stock setup for a Catrike is some SRAM hub with a freewheel and twist (grip) shift. I want to avoid that if at all possible, and thus why I was thinking about the above.

    The upper end of my gear range is fine, but if I ever want to actually ride on open road with weight more than myself I am going to have to find some solution.

    You don't need to use Grip Shift with the DualDrive, if that's the issue. I'm pretty sure that any rear shifter with the appropriate pull would work. Shifting the 3-speed requires indexing; but I'm pretty sure there are other options. I used a Sachs 3x7 in conjunction with a triple chainring setup, which meant I had 3 shifters. The hub was shifted by a torpedo shifter.

    Or you could also get a Schlumpf mountain drive, which is a 2-speed bottom bracket. It would give you a huge underdrive.

    Sturmey Archer hub 3 speed cassette CS-RK3 = 11-34 cassette and 24T granny the gear inch is 10.5

    SRAM Duel Drive hub 3 speed cassette = 11-34 cassette and 24T granny the gear inch is 10.3

    SRAM Duel Drive hub 3 speed cassette or Sturmey Archer hub 3 speed cassette CS-RK3 (Parts are hard to get and not suited for hauling big loads due to failure of the Pawls or Gear Ring) Below is a better option it's a freaking dinner plate.

    Better and stronger option is what I did as explained to MZ when he asked me about it the above 3 speed hubs will fail on tour the internals are not up to touring specs.

    With my 20 Tooth granny and 41 Tooth cassette sprocket I have a gear inch of 11.7

    I am a bit confused, are you saying I should or should not use the SA, or is a specific model of it I should avoid?

    Don't use that SA CS-RK3 which is the freehub model it will fail it can't handle the torque with a loaded rig and the SRAM model will fail. On both versions the Pawls or Gear Ring are not bomb proof for touring.

    Your better off using the below if you feel your freehub is up to the task.

    More info needed

    Which model and year Catrike do you own? The 2013 models all are 30 speed SRAM and come with 30/39/52 chainrings and 11/36 on the cassette. Even the CT700 has a decent low gear range thanks to the 36 tooth gear on the rear cluster. If you have the older 9-speed system, it would be cheaper to upgrade to the 10 speed than to use an internal hub.


    Right now SRAM dual-drive II seems to be unavailable. I looked recently and none were available on Ebay, Amazon, or at one of the larger trike stores in the US (Utah Trikes). It uses a freehub, not the older freewheel. I have it with lever shifters on a 2001 Greenspeed GTO.

    I ride a 2008 Catrike Trail, and swapped out the stock 30t granny chainring for a 24t ring. It shifts okay up front, though I can only use the bottom 4 gears when in the granny ring due to derailleur wrap.

    I have a '10 with the 9sp drivetrain. I can't really see where adding a newer drivetrain would accomplish what I am looking to do with the 3sp hub.

    OK you have now given enough information to know what gear range you have on the trike. You likely have the SRAM S7 rear derailleur with an 11/32 9 speed cassette which works out to a 19 to 90 gear inches with the 30/39/52 front chainrings, 170 mm crank, and the 20 inch drive wheel. You can go to www.sheldonbrown.com and use the gear range calculator http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/internal.html to show exactly what adding any particular multi-speed hub would do for your gear range.

    The other thing to remember is that all you may need is more time on the trike, not a wider gear range. Most of us found it more difficult to pedal a trike than a two-wheeled recumbent or a regular bike at the start. It takes time to develop your "trike legs" even if you have a lot of miles on other bikes. The gear range listed above is exactly the same as I encountered on my first trike. After a few months and lots of miles, I could climb any hill in the area (slowly!). My criticism of that trike is that it didn't have a high enough gear range to take advantage of downhill runs. My current trike, the CT 700, is geared substantially higher than the Trail and I rarely use the granny gear even to climb steep hills. When I first started I would struggle up the same hills in the lowest gears.
