    Got the Dual Drive installed

    and it makes a world of difference. Now have 81 gears and can crawl up a hill like a billy goat. I am quite pleased with it after my initial ride. It does make a strange noise in the big gear, sort of train track sound. I have read a bit about that but can't recall where and don't remember it being unusual. It doesn't really sound like anything is wrong, just noisy.
    The one and only thing I have found I don't like so far is that I will have to carry a 15mm spanner with now to remove the back tire. The QR is lost on this setup. Minor inconvenience so far as I can tell, and if that is all I have to 'gripe' about it will be good.

    Yes, the high range clicks at two different rates at once, making for a strange (but not unpleasant) sound effect.

    Lightweight bone wrench

    One of our local dollar store sells a patch kit containing patches, glue, tire spoons, and an aluminum "bone wrench". It just happens to have a 15 mm opening on the large end. As long as you don't really horse down on the nuts when you install the wheel, the bone wrench will easily remove both sides. I carry it on my GS GTO just so that I can get the rear wheel off if needed. It is compact and very light. I only broke a bone wrench once and it was trying to remove the nuts on a cheap kid's bike where the father must have used a Stilton wrench to tighten it. Your LBS may have these if you can't find them as I did.

    is that dollar type store one of the national chains? i'd like to look for that kit if we have the store here.

    except 81 Gears,,

    A SRAM dual-drive is a 3-speed hub mated to a 8/9/10 speed cassette drive unit. It allows up to 30 gears without using multiple chainrings. In the recumbent world, it's often used in conjunction with 2 or 3 chainrings, to allow greater total range.     Neat looking product. Have you used them?



    I have gone on a couple of rides with the new setup. One of my major concerns riding the trike is coming upon a hill that I couldn't handle. The area just around the house has a couple of really decent climbs and I have yet to find one that really bothers me. I can drop it to the lowest gear, crank out a steady cadence, and climb at 2mph if I have to. Going down the other side is a whole lot more fun as well. I have found that boom steer at speed can be..well..interesting to say the least.

    Have a Dualdrive on my Moulton APB and love it.
    The only thing I could knock it on is I prefer the original (Sachs 3x7) for its ability to attach trailer nuts.
    I had to sacrifice my Bob trailer when I upgraded to the Sachs evolution (Sram Dualdrive) and get a Carry Freedom Y-frame trailer.
    I used this combo (Moulton and trailer) to cross Australia from NSW to WA, so am happy to suggest the Dualdrive is a solid reliable unit.
