The disadvantage of recumbents on uphills is the inability to stand on the pedals. If you don't do that, you'll probably climb at about the same rate on a recumbent as you do on a DF bike. I certainly do. You'll still have the aero advantage on the downhill and you'll have the comfort edge on long rides.

Don't take it personally. Tim Brummer markets his Lightning bikes the same way - claiming amazing feats of speed and climbing prowess. I don't believe those claims, either. That doesn't mean the bikes are dogs, just that the claims are over-blown. It doesn't hurt Cruzbike that Maria is a strong rider and Jim is pretty good, too.
BTW, there is a Vendetta in our club. The guy bought it last fall, specifically because of Maria's RAAM performance. He has yet to take it on a club ride because he still can't deal with the pedal steer. I'm trying to get him to bring it to a ride and let me borrow it, just to test the claims. No luck so far. I figure that a 30-mile ride on one would either force me to learn it or kill me.

I wonder if the vendetta is much harder to learn on than other Cruzbikes. (Lee had a Vendetta and didn't like it, but he loves his Silvio). Regardless, your plan is sound.

I respectfully submit the OP could resolve the issue with some structured training. Yeah, I know, n+1 and all, but there are other ways to get faster.
