right, but i was complaining about precisely that lack of respect. regardless of what the "law" says, it pisses me off when it happens. especially these days when i'm all big and slow and vulnerable and stuff. of course as soon as i say that the response will be 'well just don't ride' but that just totally misses the point.

FYI i noticed this in an icebike mailing list message: http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.co...clists-deaths/

"Never do anything that you wouldn't want to have to explain to the paramedics."

"His first words were 'did you bike today?' I hesitated before admitting that I had, thinking I was going to get a lecture on how bad the roads were and how I shouldn't try to bike home. Instead he said 'man, you're lucky! I've been sitting in traffic for over 1/2 hr, and I've only gone about 2 miles. Some guy on a bike passed me about 20 minutes ago and I'm sure he's home by now'."

Realised I pretty much contradicted myself earlier with what I said, meh... I just try to get where I need to be without getting in the way of anyone else while I do it, I stop for lights mostly because I don't like the risk without extra brakes (read: making the effort, as I'm horrifically lazy), and this way I kinda get more training in - I usually always jump the green. The College St. commute game is fun to play if I stop and get to play chase with those who don't . I won't stop for a stop sign unless I absolutely have to, it's either a "no-slow-down" or a "slow-down-until-cars/peds-clear" case for me.

I think Twitch said it well before re: respecting others space/use of the road - and as zippered said, it's just a lack of that respect that gets us and others into trouble.

I like the link above, interesting stats indeed (I've never heard of them either, despite the many "reports" we see in the local media).

Also: should've stretched after riding yesterday, feeling pretty darn beat-down today ... in a good way

ok, this is getting ridiculous: same thing just happened twice on my way home.

actually, the first cyclist was riding on the sidewalk as i was proceeding through an intersection and full on rode right in front of me, forcing me to brake. not even some sketchy-looking person on a bike either, but a woman about my age. and when i said "not smart" she started yelling at me that i was a "d0uchbag". repeatedly.

    i give up!!

I actually believe he "slices through traffic" like a ginsu knife of hope.

And for bonus points, he bangs the drunk girl from winnipeg. Who is being chased by the hopeless romantic.

So I finally bit the bullet and bought the Lezyne Classic Floor Drive, after trying out the Beto and Zephyr from MEC and having both fail (the Beto chuck actually exploded on me). In short, I'm quite impressed, the thread on chuck is honestly the best designed chuck I could imagine. So much better than my last pump. Still looking for a carry-along pump, but I think it can wait for a bit now. Thanks for the help, everyone.

yeah, after replaying the incident in my mind (over and over and) i realised that it was a rather disproportionate response which was likely due to some mental health issues... or will be eventually if she continues to interact with people in such a way.

i have a hard time with watching intense images like that, but i'm guessing that it shows bryant as the instigator? personally, it would be reassuring to know that the issue is "black and white", rather than leaving some margin of doubt in the public's eye. however, i'm a bit concerned how the heck all this "evidence" being publicised in the media is going to affect the trial...

Hadn't seen it... Awful. To think Sheppard was dead moments after gives me chills.

It doesn't show anything graphic, but ya, Bryant clearly instigates the event.

That video shows the first half of the incident, which I hadn't previously seen: the first collision is not accidental at all. Is it just me, or was that fact simply not reported in print?... everything I read implied that it was both accidental and of a minor nature. Bizarre. This sad event has reminded me of the shortcomings of our major newsmedia, upon which I have always relied for all sorts of daily information.

Very true. We were only shown/told the part when Sheppard jumps on the car, how convenient.

I've tried to keep that in mind when reading just about any story that shows up in the news. Of the few local events that have shown up in the news that I've had first-hand information about it's always disturbing to read how much inaccurate reporting, excessive "editing" or just gross manipulation of the facts takes place.

I understand the anger but there isn't much that these elected officials can do; it is a court case and, personally, I think it would be in the best interests of all cyclists to let that court case proceed without any further media attention. It is already dangerously close to becoming a circus...

I wrote letters .. just using this incident to push the point that politicians and the police have a responsibility to calm the waters ... so to speak. The attitude amongst motorists simply has to change and an informative campaign to educate the citizens of this city on the rules of the road as they pertain to cyclists would help a lot .. followed by the stick of enforcement.
Attitude shift is in order, the politicians absolutely can support such a thing.

I was going to suggest undercover bike cops in the core. This would give the bike cops a sense of what it's REALLY like to ride here, as well as serve as a monstrous opportunity to get ppl in their cars as they are doing vehicular silliness.

Imagine some guy, no signal lane changing and being pushy having a badge stuck in his window with a 'pull over' command.

totally agree with the undercover bike cop thing, they might be surprised.

seems to me this would also be a good opportunity for the printed media outlets to team up with the police force to print the basic traffic rules pertaining to what cyclists are and aren't allowed to do on the roads, and what cars are and aren't allowed to do regarding cyclists and *especially* bike lanes. people might actually READ it now, and it would probably be helpful for riders and drivers alike.

...or perhaps this has already happened? I think it would be a great objective step for the police and media to take, and would be an immediate step toward increasing education. haha, at the very least, I'd LOVE to find pamphlets about the proper use of bike lanes and carry them with me, flyering every windshield I see parked in one...

The additional income from tickets would be huge. I guess the trick would be to hand out lots of small value tickets, such that it isn't worth the motorist's time to fight it.

Most of what they would catch are full on moving violations though, complete with demerit points. I'm not sure how much leeway they'd have in adjusting the ticket amount. Even if it were presented as an educational option, if the mindset sunk in that ANYBODY on a bike MIGHT be a COP.... you see how that would work for everyone. Still blows me away how much people change their driving when around the bike police.
