Jer,
Sorry to hear about that. Do you need a front wheel to hold you over? I've got a 700c OpenPro wheel, if you need to borrow.
By non-uniform, you simply mean that the amount of pull at the upper, mid, and lower ranges of the cassette will be different. That's true, so if you actually do try something like Veloce shifters with a Rival RD & Shimano/SRAM cassette, please let us know what the results were.
So I guess I'm working the bike show again. Pretty excited, and fully expecting to be exhausted by the end of it.

so i got blindsided by a taxi on my way home from work this evening. i seem to be un-injured but my front wheel is a wobbly mess and i think my fork is bent to one side. for whatever reason i deciided not to call the cops (mostly because i wasn't hurt and the driver seemed to express genuine regret). i took down all his personal and company info and gave him mine. i know we have some legal experts in this forum. i want to be sue that he will pay for the damages. i mean he said he would and i'm going to speak with his boss about it tomorrow. how can i make sure he pays up even though i didn't file a police report? i think i scared him enough that he will anyway, but just to be sure...
P.S IANAL but i've seen a lof ot insurance estimates/pay outs go down.

Brad, do you guys ever come across 1" threaded chromed Columbus forks? You know, the kind with that semi-sloping crown? I think there's a US importer that still brings them from Italy for far too much money ($350+). Last time I e-mailed, Marinoni said they could make one, but I need to confirm that again. I'd like to hook one of those up on a Cambio Rino frame I'm building up, along with a decent threaded headset and a Nitto Dynamic stem. If I simply can't source a decent threaded fork, I'll cave and eBay an EC90 or Alpha-Q equivalent.

On another note - riding your nice cross bike as a commuter through the winter is bad, mmmkay?!? Saddle - done. Brakes - done. BB - done. FWIW, Shimano BR-R550s are the absolute worst. Paul Touring Cantis would be sweet, but paying almost $200 for cantilever brakes is nuts. Need to find a happy medium. Supposedly, the old school XT cantis were excellent.

Oh they are. I'm still running the same ones that came new on my bike in '92. I've replaced the plastic covers and the springs once... and I have stockpiled enough parts to do it another 3 times. So that should last me around 40 years.
Edit: you appear to be way harder on your stuff than I am. You need some mudflaps!

I like the tektro cr720 canti's. What kind of b/b do you have? I am on the same one after 2 winters on one bike and my other bike is up to 3 now and still smooth and silky. For a $20 RPM b/b I am super impressed. How did you kill so much stuff? Other than new chains and brake pads I havn;t had anything get destroyed by winter riding.

That BB was an FSA Mega Exo. Supposedly FSA & Shimano cups are interchangeable, so I'm going to seek out an Ultegra or 105 cupset. Regarding the brakes - the little pin that goes into the canti boss actually sheared off on one of those caliper arms.

re the vento wheel campy on a shimano setup:
1. there are 2 shiftmate #2's at Urbane, not sure of the specifics if you are going to coax 10sp shifting out of it tho.
2. I have shimergo'd the hell out of my only gear'd bike to 8/9/10sp, but thats all shimano wheel setups to Campy shifters.
3. take a campy cogset and use shimano spacers (but i think the cogs are thinner with shimano?)

I have long skinny feet. I want to get mountain shoes, as I do walk on them a bit. They will be used on all my bikes. Which shoes are "The Ones", I'm leaning towards Sidi territory unless someone has another suggestion.

Shiftless bum
I like my Sidi Bulets a lot. Only downside is the hard plastic soles can be hella slippery on ice or wet rock/glossy marble-like stuff.
