Trust me, I've read and tried everything with this seatpost thing. Machine shop is a last resort before the frame goes in the trash.

I didn't recognize anyone, but since there was a big group from Toronto, did anyone do Track 1 yesterday at the velodrome?

Yes. It's a worst case scenario. Someone took the longest bare aluminum seatpost they could find, stuck it as far down the seat tube of a nice butted MTB frame as it would go, left it in the rain for probably ten years, then put it out on their front lawn with the garbage for me to find. Ammonia does not work. It is too far down to saw it all out. Even when I saw it apart, it stays stuck to the seat tube.

Take a torch to the seat tube and the aluminium will expand and then contract faster than the steel and, eventually, it will dislodge. It takes a bit of time and you should have a good bench vise to do it properly but if the frame is really that good, it will probably be worth it.

I've gotta ask, what frame is worth this much trouble to you?

Well, I'd probably pay up to 90$ to have a machinist do it for me-- I think that this would be worth it to not have to hunt for and buy another MTB frame for a winter bike. The torch idea sounds good except that I've mutilated the post to the point that a bench vice will never get a purchase on anything. Also, I don't have a torch. But, yeah, never again. Don't try and free a severely stuck seatpost unless you have the patience of a monk.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

... it's a smallish orange Rocky Mountain Sherpa with canti brakes and an ancient one piece stem and handlebar.

I did this! Of course, this is among my first posts here so obviously no one here would recognize me. It was a lot of fun!

I hope our own Danhalen makes them good, as I saw him working the shop there a few weeks back.

No, just slammed my pedal into the wall and slid out. Two other riders went down, but everyone was fine.

I took a wheel-building course at CBN a couple of weeks ago and I built a pretty nice wheel around an old Surly hub that I had sitting in my desk for years. I haven't ridden it yet, I will pop it on my SS today and see how it goes, I hope I don't lose any teeth. It has been a great couple of days for riding, the moon was incredible last night...
