yeah but op has the aerobars to cut the wind making the drops a less comfortable option. I have actually been thinking of throwing some aerobars onto my spicer for longer rides, maybe even some brakes considering the front end will already be pretty busy

But then when we turned South onto Dufferin things totally changed. I don't know why! What gear ratio are you running? 48x18 or something right? I'm running 46x16... maybe that was the difference in the hills.

And yeah, as per our conversation yesterday, I really want to build up something less practical and much lighter as well. I keep thinking that it would be nice to do all my training on the heavier commuter and then do the full ride on something lighter. It would feel like I have wings.

More of you guys should come out again though.. it was great seeing you all! Not to mention that I wasn't the only fixie for once.
I've been thinking about that. One good thing is that I always felt I had enough lung capacity to make it over the climbs, which is something I've been concerned about (looks like I quit smoking just in time). As far as reasons that I didn't do as well as I could have on some latter climbs I've come up w/ this:

- Lack of muscle strength. I'm just not strong enough yet.
- Couldn't get out of the wind. Bullhorns kept me too upright and I couldn't cut the headwind.
- Not enough leverage. 165mm cranks might have been my downfall once we hit headwind + climb.
- Lack of endurance. I'd gone on a 75k ride the day before and likely hadn't recovered fully. That'll need to improve a lot by the time we do 5 days straight.

It was an odd situation. I came into the rest stop about 10-15min before you and when we were heading out again my pace actually was faster than your's. That headwind killed me though and my climbing pace just couldn't match what you were doing. I settled into what I found comfortable at the moment and kept an eye on your cadence - it was still faster than mine even w/ the bigger gearing. Hmm, I guess I've just come up w/ another problem.

- Paced too fast in the first half of the ride. I think I even called that one myself earlier on in the day.

Regardless, I felt okay again once we got to that maaassive construction site on the right (new suburbia going in it looked like). So all was not lost and I think once the "Gu" kicked in my energy level came back up.

Based on Sheldon's site (www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/) my gearing comes out like this: 700c x 20mm, 165mm, 48 x 17 = 73.8 gear inches. I'm surprised how much tire width affects gearing (at least in theory). Okay, time to pretend like I'm working.

I can't imagine doing 73/78 gear inches for the entirety of yesterdays ride (which by the way was entirely familiar to me). <- 54 - 60 on the flats and 44 on the climbs.

You're a great spinner though. I plan on moving to a smaller gear once my spin improves. Pushing an easier gear faster feels much better to me ... I just need my body to keep up with what feels right.

Completely off topic: does anyone have the gear to rip a vhs movie ... and then in turn burn it to dvd?

So, I'm trying to get this straight:

If I'm running 700c x 23mm, 170mm, 50 and 36 chainring x (12-23 cassette) do I use these numbers:

109.5 78.8
101.1 72.8
93.9 67.6
87.6 63.1
82.1 59.1
77.3 55.7
69.2 49.8
62.6 45.1
57.1 41.1

Hmm, it doesn't seem right (oh well) but I was running from 87.6-109.5 on flats and 62.6-82.1 on hills (especially on Dufferin). Yes, I'm a masher.

And that bike Shiznaz posted is a good deal, unfortunately I think it's too large for me.

The DVP is all closed this weekend for construction, does anybody know if there's any security keeping an eye on it?

It would be a pretty sweet ride if theres not to much security or anything.
