While the diameter is bigger the wall thickness is much thinner. Big diameter + thin wall equals light but stiff. Mountain bike bar diameter just came from an existing size that was adopted by the early mountain bike builders. Easier to just use existing parts that brake levers would work with.

That's why I got a look ergo stem. I just need to paint over the hideous yellow and it's good to go.

i think we were talking about the clamp diameter, not so much the width. although some of those downhill risers are wider than my top tube is long.

Add a different saddle, road brake on the front, Ambrosio rear wheel built by Cavernmech (though he didn't know that until now), Sugino Mighty Competition cranks ... Oh, and all the decals are off the frame.

But it's still orange.

Yeah, most definitely. In fact, I think you may have mentioned something about this in the park after CM recently. I'd love to take one for a spin. Just let me know when.

So, is anyone up for some skid-fest and trackstand ruckusing tonight? Me and a couple of friends are gonna ride around the downtown core financial district tonight at around 930pm.

After watching that SF Fixie video, I gotta step up my game... Or start one

I love my gears...

I've been invited here by the lovely 32flavours so I thought I'd post a short bit about why I'm actually here.

I'm a (kinda) n00b cyclist who's in love with her bike and terrified of traffic. I made a post a while back in one of the other forums looking for group rides and lamenting that the TBN rides all start too early for me to get to (I work until 6:00pm). 32flavours said you y'all ride together sometimes and I'm totally down with that (as the young'uns say) as long as you don't mind riding with someone who'd got shifters next to her brakes

I've also just started commuting to work (9.5km each way) which I find terrifying and exhilerating all at the same time. Any tips on dealing with downtown traffic is most appreciated. I'd still like to ride with some more experienced riders now and then (safety in numbers and all that) just for fun, so if you're ever organizing a ride, drop me a line!

Welcome to the forums! Regarding d/t riding:

1. door prize: look through the rear windows of cars and at their side mirrors to see if anyone's inside.
2. streetcar tracks: cut the angle as much as you can and try to unweight the bike a bit when you go over.
3. cabs: pure evil. you'll get doored by passengers, cut off when they pull over of a fare, etc.
4. intersections: don't ever pass someone on the right. that'll be the exact moment that they turn (even if they're not signaling) and then you're in trouble.
5. your rights: don't be afraid to take the whole lane if you don't feel safe otherwise. it's your legal right.

That's a lot of "bad things" info, but you'll also enjoy a great set of rides on your bike everyday, fun exercise, more money in your pocket, etc. etc. etc. Post a picture of your bike sometime and I'll say hello if/when I see you on the street. What's your commute, btw?

Edit: got my spell on.

I can vouch for China town cement crosswalks being exceptionally slippery when wet, particularly during high speed turns.

Operator, have you been in the medicine cabinet again? You're more unintelligible than usual.
