prolly so you don't gouge the track with buttons and snaps if you go down. Oh, and so they don't gouge you...

Personally, I just didn't want to wear anything w/ even a chance of catching on the bike/someone else's bike. The whole "don't wear anything that will drive itself into your body on impact" is a valid point too in retrospect.
