The gearing ratio is kinda high but I tend to go slower when I ride fixed, so I am fine with it so far. The deep Vs are so far pretty strong and I bought them because I think they will hold up well on the street and because they were cheap; I would have gone with deep Vs regardless of the price just because I hate trueing wheels and do it rarely, like once a year. And yeah, the bulge is just me being paranoid ;)

Thanks for the comments, it is useful to hear what other Toronto riders think since we all ride on the same streets. I really should find some straps or get some egg-beaters or something, what do others here use?

Nice build. The gearing sounds pretty ******** though.. I'm running 46x16 and I find it good around downtown generally, but I occasionally thinkg about going slightly lower. I haven't ever really felt as though I need anything bigger however.

I haven't ridden in clips in over 10 years, so my thought immediately goes to a clipless system of some sort. I've been pretty happy with both my Eggbeater C's on my fixie, and so far with the Candy SL's on my road bike. The eggbeaters are starting to feel a little rough, but that's after everyday riding since last August, including all Winter. I think that's repsectable. I'm planning on picking up a rebuild kit at some point soon.

And I like the wheels.. I can't say I would have picked gold, but will admit to liking deep v's (especially rediculously colored ones) on a lot of fixies. :)

i'd say with a gear ratio like that i'd have the name of a good knee surgeon handy. other than that i likey. i'm all for leaving the steer tube uncut. you never know when you want to raise them bars. having the extra steer tube length is a whole lot more attractive than using one of those (pardon my crass language) "*****" stems (you know the ones i mean, up jutting about 40 degrees). and i'd have no problems with those wheels, they are what 32 spokes? assuming they're well built by hand you shouldn't have truing issues. but for dog's sake get yourself something to hold your feet to the pedals, man! you've got to slow down somehow (flinstone method not withstanding).

saw someone zip by me on bloor at yonge a few minutes ago. baby blue fixie, oversized tubes, weird shaped carbon fork, no brakes. anyone here?

Very nice!!!! I think the carbon is giving you some 'give'. I love the aero, for street. I used to run tall areos in MTL messing, helps make it city style bomb proof. That's a pretty tall gearing you got there. Get that wound up on the street and you'll have trouble stopping no? IMO no need to cut the tube as you may want to adjust or even replace/sell the fork at some point.

oooh this is a pretty sweet ride. Looks like this style of handlebar is now legal again.

The only thing I am wondering about is why the rear wheel isn't closer to the curved seat tube that was obviously designed to shield the wheel from the wind... But what do I know?


EDIT: the bike is a custom Avanti (kiwi company) that was a collaboration between new zealand cycling federation or whatever, avanti and a high zoot composite yacht compenent company. Sarah Ulmer rode it on the new world record womens individual pursuit.

so, tour talk. Specifically my pool picks. :) I haven't paid much attention in the past week. I just checked the standings and Hushovd is back to 83rd overall? Yikes! I mean, I know he's a sprinter so I didn't expect him to stay up at the top of the GC listings, but 83rd?! That didn't take long! He's still 5th in the sprinter category though. And Rasmussen still hasn't gotten any climber's points, but he's actually in 82nd place (oddly one place in front of Hushovd). I guess they haven't really hit anything that would really put him in his element though anyway. Have they even had anything beyond cat 3/4 climbs yet? T-mobile and Lovkvist are doing well though! (ps. Valverde was my yellow jersey pick)

rasmussen has been on anti-biotics since the tour started, so that's affecting his performance. i'm sort of hoping that he'll shine once they hit the mountains!

Landis is golden. Trick was to get as close to the front as possible before the rest day and the mountains lest you have to beat everyone soundly day after day (in the mtns no less) in order to claw your way to the top positions and take yellow. Landis merely has to stay with the herd at this point, and react to dangerous attacks only. If you're 8 minutes back, good luck on ya now.

Weekends at the shop are always crazy, I am always multi-tasking and have like 10 bikes I am doing simultaneously taking them off and on the stand while helping three customers at once.

We said hi, then I had to run around and when I looked to see if you were still in the shop you weren't.

Were you just checking out the shop or were you looking for anything in particular?

Hushovd was penalized at the end of one of the stages for not keeping his line, as a result he was pretty much screwed for the rest of the tour. He's riding better than 83rd place but thats where they put him. Kind of sad as I saw the replays and he barely did anything to deserve such a harsh penalty. I also like huge scandianavian people... they seem kind of wholesome and you gotta give respect to a guy named THOR.

I have to give my vote to Landis to win overall (everyone else is gone now!) although I really want Cadel Evans to take it because I like aussies.

Yea I agree I didn't see anything overtly dangerous in his sprinting. Besides isn't that what sprints are all about? What kinda pressure does give a kid being named after the Norse God of Thunder?

Almost as much pressure as naming your kid Skeletor. I've been going by my middle name for the past few years though.
