You know an 8-speed shifter will work perfectly with 7-speeds right?
The spacing between cogs on 7-speed and 8-speed cassettes are same.
The 8-speed cassette is when Shimano widened the cassette to its current width.
Between 8, 9, and 10-speed cassettes is where the cog spacing gets narrower.
