Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That would be cool, but I've got to imagine that there would be some looooong stretches without much resembling civilization.

+1. I drove up to Anchorage during my college days. Worked for the summer, sold the car, and flew home. That drive (the 'Alcan') was plenty remote. This idea is nuts.

I wouldn't mind no civilization. Though being a highway there would have to be gas stations and some places to eat along the way. You would just have to make sure you made it through eastern Russia in the small window they have for warmer weather. Siberia in the winter would be a no go.

I'm kinda guessing that bicycles won't be permitted on this "highway", but maybe if the BF mods flexed their muscles they could make for a special exception.

I like my doses of solitude, but some of the stretches in eastern Russia, Alaska and Canada go well beyond solitude. On a bike? Forget it.

I'm the loner type. Wouldn't bother me a bit. I'm most at home when I'm in the woods with no human contact. And I've spent a few years worth of my life in the outdoors sleeping under the stars in my previous career.

We need to start lobbying to put bike lanes on it now, before they start construction!

Ha! In Portland, they'd be talking about light-rail transit along the route too. And bioswales as a green solution to reduce runoff. And charging stations every 500 miles.

You've slept more than 1,000 nights outside? Doing what? What was the longest consecutive streak?

Besides, I'm not talking about just the anti/social aspect. As Vol alludes to, provisioning is major concern. I wouldn't take the trip lightly in a car, so I have a hard time believing someone so flippant about riding it on a bike. Also, you mention the "narrow window" for traversing Siberia, but we're probably talking about three or four thousand miles in Siberia alone. Yeah. No.

Well, I figure Elon Musk will pay for the charging stations himself.

unless this concept includes heated roadways, the window to drive/ride the entire length would be small

Reminds me of Long Way Round, the motorcycle trip with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman from London to NYC. Very good show.

I was in the infantry for 24 years. We used to spend all summer and winter in the field, with maybe a weekend or two break. I think the longest was around four months when I was living in a 5 foot hole on the Iraq/Saudi border during Desert Shield before we finally got relieved for Christmas.
